Job Description

An Industrial Hygienist I (IH I) or Associate Industrial Hygienist within our Building Sciences team at CTEH will focus on environmental assessments related to indoor environments, air quality, and building materials. As an IH I, you will conduct building-related surveys, including indoor air quality assessments, moisture and mold inspections, and hazardous material evaluations in various building environments. You will also assist in the evaluation of structural integrity and building system performance as part of environmental risk assessments. The role includes assessing potential health risks from building-related hazards and working on building science-based investigations, including assessments related to asbestos, lead, mold, and other building contaminants. In addition, you will utilize scientific methodology to collect, analyze, and report on data derived from building materials, air quality, water quality, and other environmental samples. This role requires a blend of technical expertise and an understanding of building sciences, environmental conditions, and human health risk assessments. You will also be involved in providing consultation for clients and stakeholders regarding potential environmental hazards in built environments, and your work will directly contribute to safe, healthy, and sustainable building practices. The position involves travel opportunities and provides a flexible work environment when not on projects. As part of the Building Sciences team, you will support other departments as needed and respond to emergency situations as required. Preference will be given to candidates based in Atlanta, GA and who hold the credentials necessary to perform building science-related tasks in the state. This position reports to a Project Manager or another senior-level manager.

ACTIVITIES/TASKS/SCOPE

Assist in understanding and applying advanced concepts of building-related hazards, including mold, asbestos, lead, and other hazardous materials found in buildings and structures. Conduct environmental surveys within building environments, including air sampling, moisture assessments, and indoor air quality evaluations. Perform qualitative and quantitative assessments for building-related environmental hazards, including but not limited to air quality surveys, moisture intrusion inspections, hazardous material assessments (e.g., asbestos, lead paint, and mold), and evaluation of building ventilation systems. Provide technical support in the identification and mitigation of environmental hazards in buildings, including potential health risks arising from poor indoor air quality and building system failures. Assist with the collection of environmental samples from buildings, including air, surface wipe, dust, and water samples for analysis of contaminants and hazardous materials. Analyze collected data and collaborate with project managers to provide detailed reports and recommendations based on building science principles. Perform building-related environmental risk assessments, particularly focusing on the interaction between building systems and occupant health. Assist senior staff in the development and review of building-related environmental health and safety plans and strategies. Participate in the analysis and reporting of findings related to building materials and environmental contaminants (e.g., mold, VOCs, and radon). Assist with the preparation and delivery of building assessments and inspection reports for clients, highlighting risks associated with building health and safety. Collaborate with other environmental and building science professionals to resolve complex environmental health issues in building settings. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal building codes, environmental health regulations, and guidelines related to building contaminants and health risks. Perform all tasks with a strong commitment to ethical standards in the building sciences profession, ensuring all findings and recommendations are backed by scientific evidence. Demonstrate a professional attitude toward clients, customers, and co-workers to reflect favorably on the company. Remain available for emergency response and participate in travel as required for building science assessments, inspections, and consultations. Support other service areas as assigned, under appropriate supervision. Remain ready and available for emergency response upon client request, with frequent, sometimes extended, travel. Perform job tasks under moderate supervision and work semi-independently. Maintain compliance with the company’s environmental, health, and safety policies and all applicable client, state, federal, and local environmental rules, policies and regulations; and, Perform such other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & CREDENTIALS

Bachelor’s degree in industrial hygiene, safety, or a related science field (chemistry, biology, physics, engineering, toxicology, etc.) and completion of specialized training in building sciences within 6 months of employment; or, two to four years as an Industrial Hygienist II, availability of position, or equivalent from a previous employer (preferred). Georgia Mold Consultant License (preferred) or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. Georgia Asbestos Inspector License (preferred) or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. Georgia Asbestos Air Monitoring Technician License (preferred) or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Strong ability to collect and analyze building environmental data and prepare technical reports on findings. Ability to communicate effectively with clients, engineers, and regulatory agencies regarding building health risks and safety recommendations. Proficiency in the use of environmental monitoring equipment for air and surface sampling.

Completion of all CTEH policies and procedures. Ability to comply with all job specific OSHA requirements, including the wearing of a respirator. Computer and data management skills in a Windows-based platform. Multitasking and balance multiple priorities simultaneously. Work in a fast-paced environment. Work well alone and with a team. Ability to travel.
