General Safety Specialist –

Environmental Health & Safety Job Summary:

Assist departments with EHS with daily operations and safety inspections required to ensure compliance with applicable UMMC policies/procedures and state and federal regulations and standards. Will provide guidance and training to UMMC personnel concerning safety procedures and the proper use of safety equipment. Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety or related field plus two (2) years of related experience or equivalent combination of education/experience.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:

N/A Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, statutes, regulations, rules, policies, and procedures. Skills in performing safety inspections and ensuring compliance with applicable safety codes and regulations. Classroom instructional and hands-on training skills. The ability to work in or around hazardous conditions such as exposure to flames, chemicals, and biological agents (required to wear personal protective equipment). The ability to communicate effectively and react calmly in emergency situations. The ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare and/or present reports. Responsibilities Establishes, maintains, and ensures adherence to policies and procedures related to general safety areas, including biological, chemical, fire and radiation safety. Develops and oversees the implementation of effective employee safety training. Conducts safety training and presentations. Conducts building inspections to identify hazardous conditions and practices in order to help identify training and education that will assist in prevention of worker injuries, and repost same to hospital administration as needed. Reviews and interprets code revisions, moratoriums or equivalencies for applicability to UMMC and hospital specific policies and procedures, and compliance. Collects data and prepares reports on tracking and trending of identified safety deficiencies along with recommendations for corrective actions. Serves as a member of and assist in the training of the UMMC Fire Brigade. Physical and Environmental Demands Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, frequent working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, frequent driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
