Description of Work This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. This is an Engineering Specialist I position in the Graham District Engineer’s Office. This position works independently performing advanced level technical work supporting engineers in administration and execution of District programs including review of complex plan submittals for right of way encroachments, commercial driveways and subdivision road construction and road addition/abandonments and preparation of associated documents as well as design of small roadway improvement projects and administration of highway construction contracts in accordance with established policies and guidelines. This position supervises and directs lower-level technicians in survey, design, field inspection, and administrative activities for District managed programs. Serves as a primary point for public contact and is required to interact with local governmental agencies, utility representatives, contractors, property owners, and others to discuss adherence to policies and procedures. Answers questions and addresses complaints from the public by telephone, written correspondence, or in person. Performs a variety of office functions including review of plans, permit submittals, traffic studies, documentation of project activities, recording project records and maintenance of project files. Ability to establish and maintain positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public. Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involves explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups
Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems
Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments
Computer experience including office software, drafting software and plan reading software
Additional Expectations:
Ability to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner. Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to work nights and weekends as required, to any assigned project within the Division. Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Safety toe shoes required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment screening. Associate’s degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six (6) years of progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight (8) years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
