Job Description

Safety Consultant State of North Carolina – Dept of Transportation Forsyth County, NC Description of Work This an anticipated vacancy. This Safety Consultant position is responsible for providing safety support to NCDOT Highway Division 9. NCDOT Highway Division 9 is responsible for the design, construction, maintenance and operations of the state transportation network in the Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Rowan and Stokes counties. This position reports directly to the Deputy Division Engineer. This position is located in the Winston-Salem Resident Engineer 1 Office. Your work will include assessment and development of safety engineering controls and designs; performing accident investigations, program auditing and recordkeeping, performing industrial hygiene surveys and monitoring; environmental engineering; developing and providing safety training and education; emergency planning; interpreting laws, standards, and codes; and reviewing and researching new or revised safety standards and laws to determine their applicability. This position will assist in administration of the Departments Workers Compensation Program. This position requires good working knowledge of OSHA standards and recordkeeping for general industry and construction. You will need a basic understanding of MUTCD, confined space, trenching and shoring and crane safety. You will also need the ability to express yourself effectively both in writing and orally to establish effective working relationships with departmental personnel. You should have the ability to investigate accidents, determine causes and recommend, develop, and implement corrective action. You should also have the ability to develop and present safety program training. This position is responsible for recognizing safety hazards and unsafe acts by workers in a variety of shops and construction sites. A strong knowledge of computers with basic or intermediate skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and database software is needed. The minimal physical requirements for this position require working in the all weather conditions outside on uneven terrain on construction sites. Employees in this position must wear a hard hat and use a respirator. This position also requires operation of a State vehicle and safety toe footwear is required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Considerable knowledge of OSHA regulations Considerable knowledge of federal and state safety and health codes and security regulations and best management practices Experience in data analysis providing strategic direction that addresses adverse trends with injuries, security incidents, or Worker Compensation Experience in computers with basic/intermediate skills in Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and database software Experience in managing Safety program policies, procedures, and budgets Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Bachelor’s degree with a major in safety engineering, industrial engineering, industrial management or technology, occupational safety, or one of the physical sciences or an equivalent technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of three years of progressive occupational and safety and health experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
