Closing Date 05/02/2025 General Definition of Work The safety specialist, under general supervision, performs moderately complex work with minimal decision-making discretion implementing and monitoring safe work practices at school and department worksites to keep people safe in the workplace. The position is responsible for reviewing workplace safety programs and training procedures, establishing protocols based on Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and natural disaster regulation/guidance. Employee performs both school-based and district-level work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Director of Environmental Health and Stewardship. Salary/Status NC 16 Salary Non-Certified Schedule/Full-time, 12 months Reports To Director of Environmental Health and Stewardship Place of Work The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time. Essential Functions Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
Identify and mitigate potential hazards through safety policies, procedures and training
Implement Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSAS 18001) standards
Prepare and execute action plans and programs to ensure health and environmental safety awareness and best practices in district-wide efforts
Conduct risk assessments, accident investigations, site inspections, and audits. Inform leadership of areas that are noncompliant Investigate safety-related issues, including chemical laboratory inspections, disposal of laboratory chemicals, school kitchen issues, transportation and traffic issues, or emergency preparedness concerns
Participate in emergency preparedness planning
Develop, implement, and monitor accident reduction programs
Generate risk assessment documentation, incident reports, accident reports, and health and safety manuals, etc.
Maintain safety and health databases. Analyze OSHA logs and safety data for trends; identify where controls need to be implemented to reduce or eliminate risk
Complete local, state, or federal surveys and reports accurately and promptly including OSHA reporting
Coordinate with vendors and the finance purchasing department to ensure timely payment processing when goods and services are purchased to address compliance concerns
Collaborate with Mecklenburg County Risk Management and the district’s Human Resources/Worker’s Compensation team
Develop and deliver employee safety training and maintain training documentation
Coordinate safety committee meetings and respond to employee concerns and requests
Facilitate staff meetings and attend other related meetings as needed/required
Create an inclusive environment with positive communication/public relations
Perform related work as assigned or required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Thorough knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of public school system policies related to safety and environmental health
Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements applicable to safety and environmental health
Thorough knowledge of OSHA and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations
