ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST
(Food and Lodging) Job #997-1 Open Until Filled Located in the heart of North Carolina’s Piedmont, Rowan County is attractively and conveniently nestled between the State’s largest city and its Capitol. Rowan County is made up of more than 20 departments and nearly 1,250 employees that are committed to providing a wealth of services to County residents and businesses. The County is currently accepting applications for the position of Environmental Health Specialist (Food & Lodging.) This position promotes public health programs through education, surveillance, consultation, inspection and enforcement of Local and State public health rules and regulations; inspects and grades restaurants, schools, day cares, hospitals, motels, nursing and rest homes, and other establishments with facilities affecting the public’s health; investigates childhood lead poisoning cases; and investigates complaints relating to various environmental health hazards and problems. Start date will be on or after July 7, 2025 Requires a thorough knowledge of biological and environmental chemistry as they apply to environmental health programs administered; the ability to analyze and comprehend a wide variety of technical and administrative regulations, records, and reports; the ability to exercise sound judgment and deal tactfully with the public while enforcing public health laws and regulations; and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Minimum qualifications include:
1. Postgraduate Degree or Bachelor’s Degree from a National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC) accredited program; or a Public Health Bachelor’s or Postgraduate Degree and have one or more years of experience in the field of environmental health practice; or a Bachelor’s Degree or a Postgraduate Degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or its equivalent 45 quarter hours of course work in the physical, biological, natural, life or health sciences and have one or more years of experience in the field of environmental health practice; or have previous qualifying REHS experience in or outside of North Carolina, Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) or Military Spouse with a minimum of 30 semester hours or its equivalent 45 quarter hours in physical, biological, natural, life or health sciences; and 2. Must be a registered Environmental Health Specialist or have approval for registration as an Environmental Health Specialist by the North Carolina Board of Environmental Health Specialist Examiners prior to employment; and 3.
