Summary:

This position involves significant field work across multiple project sites, primarily in the Northeast, requiring frequent travel. The Field Safety Specialist performs a variety of safety tasks including field observations, coaching, onboarding, and training, with a focus on supporting the Power Team’s planning for upcoming work. Employees may be assigned to individual projects as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Conduct regular walk-through inspections of rights of way, substations, and other work locations to ensure compliance with company, client, and regulatory safety policies and regulations. Identify, document, and recommend resolutions for hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions; ensure corrective actions are implemented. Prepare supporting documentation for all safety inspections, highlighting dangerous areas or procedures and recommending corrective procedures. Coordinate with the assigned Safety Manager to identify key areas of focus and establish inspection frequencies. Prepare and submit safety inspection reports using established company formats. Ensure adequate safety supplies are maintained and procured as necessary in coordination with the Safety Manager. Assist in investigating personal injury and property damage accidents, compiling data and preparing reports according to program procedures and regulatory requirements. Issue various work permits, such as for confined spaces, as required. Assist federal, state, and local inspectors during walkthrough tours and inspections. Conduct new hire onboarding and ongoing employee training. Maintain current knowledge of applicable health and safety regulations and identify requirements relevant to the work.

Requirements:

Ability to work in various weather conditions, stand and walk for extended periods. Strong communication and leadership skills. Effective workload management skills including planning, coordinating, organizing, prioritizing, and handling multiple tasks. Demonstrated decision-making ability and maintenance of confidentiality. Proven capability to work effectively in a diverse workforce.

Education and Experience:

CUSP certification from the Utility Safety & Ops Leadership Network required, or must be obtained within one year. 2-5 years of experience in regulated utilities focusing on transmission, distribution, and substations.

OSHA 500

strongly preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health strongly preferred. ET & D 10 and 20-hour certifications preferred. ASP or GSP certification from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Safety Considerations:

Typically works 8-12 hours per day, 5-6 days per week in extreme hot and cold environments after acclimatization. Required to use personal protective equipment daily and may encounter wildlife; protective measures provided. May be required to perform duties on variable terrain, in confined spaces, and under hazardous conditions with appropriate safety measures in place.
