Full Time Job Description:

The primary responsibility of the Systems Monitoring Specialist is to proactively view the Syracuse Universitys campus-wide camera system, known as the Genetec Video Security System (VSS), to mitigate crimes-in-progress, suspicious, serious, or significant incidents before the opportunity occurs. The position is also responsible for acknowledging electronic access control alarms and notifying Emergency Communications Center (ECC) dispatchers of the alarm incidents to affect the proper response of emergency first-responders. The position reports to Campus Safety and Emergency Management Services under the Emergency Management and Business Continuity section.

Education and Experience:

An Associates degree in a technical, criminal justice, and/or emergency first-responder communications field preferred.
Must successfully pass a background investigation, a skills behavior exam, a pre-employment drug screening and participate in random drug testing program.

Skills and Knowledge:

Demonstrated knowledge and experience using and navigating various computer/cloud-based systems.
Knowledge and understanding of various models of video and alarm equipment.
Must be able to maintain attentiveness, avoid distractions, and remain focused for lengthy periods of time.
Ability to clearly communicate in person, using two-way radio transmissions, and/or telephone systems.

Responsibilities:

Visually monitors and provides electronic surveillance activity for over 2,000 camera views, including interior and exterior cameras.
Operates ECC camera systems and reports crimes-in-progress, suspicious, serious, or significant incidents that are viewed in live time to the Emergency Communications Center dispatching staff to affect the response of emergency first-responders.
Prioritizes monitoring and surveillance work based on trends, information, and other inputs.
Records/logs/downloads video footage related to crimes-in-progress, suspicious, serious, or significant incidents according to policy and protocols.
Routes, or turns over video footage to appropriate Department of Public Safety unit (i.e. Investigations, patrol officer, etc.) according to policy and protocols.
Acknowledges electronic access control alarms and reports alarms to the Emergency Communications Center dispatching staff to affect a response or dispatches to emergency first-responders as directed/trained.
Systematically verifies camera/alarm systems are in working order.
Trouble-shoots and reports camera equipment malfunctions.
Trouble-shoots and reports electronic access control malfunctions.
Participates in professional development training, meetings, and events.
Participates in the annual Human Resources performance partnership appraisal process.
Other duties as assigned.
