The Solid Waste Technician performs routine manual laborwhich does not require a high degree of skill; may also drivetrucks and light tractors while in a training status and relatedwork as apparent or assigned. In most cases, the SWT will workunder immediate direction of an employee of higher grade or aforeman. This position requires reporting to multiple locations, asneeded, to support various operational needs across ourorganization.
Essential Functions:
Performs related manual labor as required. Performs general landscaping duties such as mowing grass, pruningshrubs, raking grass, and removing trash from SWDA property. May drive pick-ups on light hauls. May drive or operate small tractor, mower, truck/vehicle that doesnot require CDL, often off-road trucks. May drive pick-ups on light hauls. Performs general daily maintenance on equipment, including but notlimited to greasing and fueling heavy equipment. Details trucks and equipment.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Required Skills, Abilities and Knowledge:
Basic skills in the operation, maintenance and safe use of trucksand light tractors; basic knowledge of the problems involved inoperating assigned equipment; general knowledge of traffic rulesand regulations; Knowledge of safety rules, including accidentcauses and prevention (taught on the job); ability to maintaineffective working relationships with associates and general public;ability to effectively communicate in a courteous manner.
Special Requirements:
Must possess a valid Drivers License. (Commercial Drivers Licenserequired for promotion.) Must successfully complete a pre-employment physical, drugscreening and background check. Willing to work overtime and weekends in emergencies or whenrequired. Willing to comply with the following dress standards: clean, neatattire with appropriate foot and hand gear. Willing to work evening shifts; Willing to go pick up garbage;Ability to follow directions; Willing to assist mechanics asneeded.
Physical Requirements:
See well enough to read, write and safely operate garbage truck;Hear well enough to respond to verbal communications; Speak well enough to answer questions in a polite, courteousmanner. Wear PPE to minimize exposure to hazards that cause seriousworkplace injuries and illnesses. Body mobility to perform inspections and operate vehicle; Bodymovement of mobility to bend, move, stand, and lift. Use of hands and fingers to perform manual work. Physical dexterity sufficient to operate lever, gears, etc. Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally liftand/or move 100 pounds. Frequently standing and walking to complete daily tasks, sittingwhen driving and operating vehicle or equipment, climbing ontoequipment, and using foot controls to operate vehicle orequipment. Occasionally kneeling, bending or crouching when monitoringvehicle, and balancing when mounting and dismounting; daily liftingshovels, tools and other equipment, pushing/pulling equipment,reaching for of handling tools and supplies. Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverseenvironmental conditions, such as extreme heat or extreme cold,dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes,temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electriccurrents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonousagents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
