The Vehicle Mechanic position includes journey-level work in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-driven automotive and small engine equipment in mechanical repair and maintenance. Duties include performing skilled tasks of automobiles, heavy-duty trucks, tractors, other standard and special automotive equipment, and small engines by standard trade practices.
General Description
Performs preventive maintenance and inspects, diagnoses, and repairs various County vehicles for Port Everglades.
Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Two (2) years of journey-level experience in maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment or closely related experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses Required
Ability to secure and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment.
Ability to secure and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification card (TWIC) within 60 days of employment and for the duration of employment.
Ability to secure and maintain a valid Seaport Business Purpose Credential for the duration of employment.
ASE Certifications may be required based on the area of assignment.
Preferences
4+ years experience with heavy industrial equipment repair (i.e., boom trucks, sweepers, and/or aerial lifts)
4+ years of experience performing hydraulic repairs
ASE and NAEVT certification in the following areas: Engine Performance, Electrical Systems, Heating and Air Conditioning, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Manual Drive Train and Axle, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Engine Repair, Painting and Refinishing, Non-Structural Analysis and Damage Repair, Structural Analysis and Repairs. The following are associated with

Heavy Duty Trucks:

Gasoline Engines, Diesel Engines, Drive Trains, Suspension and Steering, Electrical Systems, Heating and Air Conditioning, and Preventive Maintenance
4+ years experience with small engine repair (i.e., lawn mowers, edgers, trimmers, diesel, unleaded, and 2-cycle)
Certified as an Industrial Hydraulic Technician (Fluid Power Society)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.
Performs complex maintenance and repair on a wide range of equipment, including heavy-duty tractors, trucks, light vehicles, and mowers, in accordance with standard trade practices. Responsibilities include both scheduled and unscheduled repairs, such as troubleshooting and repairing electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems. Work may be performed in the shop, at field locations, or occasionally after hours.
Conducts diagnostic evaluations and identifies operational defects; performs road tests to ensure repairs are complete and equipment is safe for return to service.
Performs tire services, including inspection, repair, mounting, and balancing of both light-duty and heavy-duty off-road tires.
Maintains up-to-date shop manuals and references to determine part types and specifications. Manages parts inventory, prepares requisitions, and maintains detailed records. Ensures tools and equipment are kept in clean and functional condition.
Repairs and services alternative fuel systems, including propane-powered equipment, in accordance with safety standards and technical guidelines.
Oversees parts procurement process, including researching part numbers, verifying vehicle and equipment compatibility, identifying vendors and dealers, securing best pricing, placing orders (online or by phone), picking up parts, and managing credit card payments and related documentation for the division.
Performs preventive maintenance tasks such as fluid changes/additions, inspection of brakes, belts, suspension, steering systems, lights, and tires, as well as replacement of filters and other components to ensure equipment reliability and safety.
Performs related duties as assigned, supporting overall maintenance operations and departmental goals.
Other duties generally associated with this job class include:
Provides off-site service or repairs for disabled or non-transportable vehicles or equipment; ensures proper performance during daily operations or emergency repairs.
Prepares and manages work orders independently and submits related invoices for processing.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
Involves routine and frequent exposure to traffic; moving machinery.
