Work:

Sufficient education to read and understand technical material and prepare simple written reports and enter data electronically into the City’s fleet management system. Three (3) years of experience as an automotive mechanic. Or Combination of education, training and/or work experience equal to or higher than the requirements listed above as determined by Human Resources. Provides a basic minimum set of mechanic tools as required by Fleet Management.

Necessary Special Requirements:

Possession of an appropriate driver license for equipment operated and any license, training or certification required by law or regulation to complete assigned tasks. Valid and current Class-E driver’s license. Proficiency in brakes, suspension, tune-ups, drivability and a/c systems. All technicians must acquire the

Certification provided by Fleet Management if they are not already 609 HVAC Certified within one year of employment. Achievement of highly related job skills (above basic requirements) will be provided compensation for skills mastered pursuant to the City of Pensacola Premium Pay Guidelines effective 10-1-2020.

Nature of Work:

This is a skilled position for repair and maintenance of light duty automotive and equipment service work. An employee in this class is responsible for mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of auto­motive and related equipment. The employee is responsible for diagnosing and executing repairs needed, reporting time and supplies used on each vehicle serviced or repaired, and ordering parts. The work is assigned by means of verbal and written orders and is carried out independently by the employee in accordance with standard practices of the trade.

Examples of Work:

Communicates with supervisory staff, drivers and equipment operators to determine services needed and gathers information necessary to diagnose problems.
Repairs and services automobiles, trucks, tractors, power mowers, and other motorized equipment.
Drives service trucks and makes road service calls to facilitate repairs on site.
Diagnoses and repairs engines, drive trains, electrical, steering and suspensions, braking systems and other components.
Operates all types of shop equipment including hydraulic jacks, air and electric powered tools, bench grinders and brake lathes, etc.
May perform minor fabrication and welding repair work utilizing electric arc welding and MIG welding equipment, acetylene torches, drill press, side grinders and related equipment.
Does all mechanical work in accordance with quality standards and practices of the trade for gasoline, compressed natural gas and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
Assist in repair and maintenance of shop tools and equipment, and general housekeeping necessary to maintain a safe and productive working environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment of the mechanic’s trade.
Knowledge of the principles and mechanics of all types of internal combustion engines and motorized equipment.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety pre­cautions of the trade.
Ability to diagnose and repair defects in motorized equipment.
Ability to keep simple records.
Ability to correctly identify and order parts for repairs.
Ability to interpret and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Ability to use a variety of hand tools including air and electric powered wrenches, drills, and other standard tools and equipment of the mechanic’s trade.
Ability to recognize and correct potential sources of hazardous material spills. Mental and Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to hold or feel, reach with hands and arms, walk, talk, smell and hear. Employee must be able to visually inspects vehicles and parts. Specific vision abilities include near distance, far distance, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Employees will be required to use hearing as applicable for the troubleshooting, repair, and completion of projects. Job requires dexterity for handling small parts and tools in tight spaces, and sufficient strength for handling larger parts and tools. Job requires employee to push, pull, reach above/at/below shoulder, stand, stoop, crouch, bend, walk, crawl, kneel, and carry/lift 10-100 lbs. Work must be completed utilizing safety glasses, steel-toed work shoes, uniform, hearing protection and other PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
