JOB SUMMARY
This position diagnoses, repairs, and does preventive maintenance on buses and other support vehicles owned and operated by the Board of Education to ensure that students have safe and reliable transportation. This position works under close supervision according to set procedures.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Inspects and verifies compliance for buses for Georgia Department of Education; fills all of the paperwork out for state; inputs data into FleetVision program.
Makes any repairs found on buses with deficiencies; puts vehicle back into service; repairs any vehicle that the operator had made a work order on; inputs repairs information on repair orders and into the FleetVision program.
Troubleshoots and repairs electrical components, steering components, exhaust systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, anddrive trains; maintains time and materials records.
Replaces leaking gaskets, defective items, and seals.
Completes all work orders in a safe, timely, effective and efficient manner.
Maintains a list of components used to prepare each vehicle; ensures new supplies are requisitioned; maintains time and materials records as required.
Checks inventory of parts order as needed; gets price quotes for large repair orders; keeps track of cores to be returned to vendors for credits; packs them and arranges for pickup.
Makes recommendations for purchase of vehicles for the District; works with outside vendors on special projects.
Monitors the 2-way radio for any problems or break downs during operating hours; performs emergency service calls for the repair of disabled District vehicle(s).
Participates in training and professional development activities as required by school system, state and federal regulations.
Drives a school bus as needed, following bus driver duties and responsibilities.
Adheres to all Federal, State, County, and Board of Education rules and regulations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or State Approved High School Equivalency. One (1) year of prior experience in diagnosis and repair or diesel and gas engines, or closely related experience. Or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of mechanical repair and maintenance.
Skill in the use of equipment, tools, computers, and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.
Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Ability to write simple correspondence and the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small-group situations.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions, and to interpret directions.
Ability to read wiring schematics and use state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and tools to trouble shoot and repair buses.
Ability to work as a team member.
CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a valid Georgia Commercial Driver License Class B with P, S and air brakes endorsements. Must meet all requirements for school bus driver certification. ASE certification(s) preferred.

Salary/Terms/Benefits:
239 day work year; 8 hours per day
Salary:
Grade 52: Hourly (placement on salary schedule based on years or experience). Up to ten (10) years allowed. The stated salary range reflects the opportunity for pay over the course of the employee’s tenure. The top pay is not a potential starting salary
