General Description:

The City of Jacksonville is seeking a Fleet Mechanic to join our team of professional mechanics at the City’s Public Services Complex. The Fleet Mechanic performs intermediate skilled mechanical work maintaining and repairing a variety of gasoline and diesel powered automotive and specialized equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Fleet Supervisor and/or Lead Mechanic. The salary posted is the full salary range for this position. The starting salary is expected to be in the range of $43,216.58 – $56,181.63 depending on qualifications. Essential Functions/Typical Tasks Providing preventive maintenance, repairing and maintaining cars, trucks and other automotive equipment.

Diagnoses mechanical problems, determines required repair or replacement of parts and initiates repair.
Refaces valves and seats, grinding, assembling and adjusting them.
Installs rings and bearings and effects proper adjustment.
Greases and changes oil and other fluids in equipment.
Repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies.
Tunes motors using standard testing equipment.
Takes down, repairs and reassembles air compressors, pumps and related equipment.
Refaces brake drums and relines brakes.
Does electrical work on automotive equipment, such as troubleshooting electrical problems and repairing or replacing defective parts, repairing and adjusting lights, and repairing generators and starters.
Maintains shop area; keeps shop clear of discarded materials.
Performs related tasks as required. Required Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by course work in automotive repair and 2 to 5 years experience in repairing automotive and power driven equipment. Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina. Ability to obtain ASE certification in either automotive or medium/heavy trucks. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of passenger cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment; thorough knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery; ability to diagnose the more common defects in the drive trains, chassis and other components of automotive equipment; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to interpret work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts; ability to understand and follow instructions in both oral and written form; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
