The Highway Department, under the Department of Public Services, provides for the maintenance and improvement of the Town’s roads, bridges, dams, storm drainage, landfills, and related infrastructure; oversees fleet maintenance needs for all Town vehicles and heavy equipment; provides winter storm management for all municipal roads; and provides special project support to various Town Departments. The position of Auto Mechanic requires someone with considerable knowledge in automotive mechanics, gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, pumps and valves, generators, and welding; the hazards and safety precautions common to maintenance and repair activities; and the practices, methods, materials, and tools used in modern equipment maintenance. The Auto Mechanic is responsible for performing maintenance and repair of the Town’s automobiles, trucks, and heavy construction equipment such as graders, loaders, tractors, and related equipment, including diagnosing mechanical and electrical problems; performing a variety of mechanical and electrical repairs; overhauling and tuning engines; adjusting and replacing parts including valves, pistons, and main bearing assemblies; repairing or replacing generators, starters, ignition systems, transmissions, differentials, springs, and front or rear axle assemblies and hydraulic systems; welding and brazing metals; and keeping records of work performed. When not engaged in these responsibilities, the employee may be driving a truck or other equipment, or performing manual labor as required. This position requires the ability to service equipment in a skillful, safe, and efficient manner, make field repairs and adjustments, and perform assorted tasks requiring manual labor for extended periods under unfavorable weather conditions when necessary. Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to skillfully repair and maintain automobiles, trucks, and heavy construction equipment, and establish and maintain successful working relationships with fellow employees and the public. Please note this position is considered essential and the Auto Mechanic must be available for 24/7 on call status for all shifts to respond to winter storm, weather, and other emergency events; the position includes storm operations responsibilities, including 24/7 on call status for sanding/salting/snow plowing events, and requires the ability to drive and operate equipment during winter storm events and unfavorable conditions, often for lengthy durations. To be considered, candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent, and three years of experience in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; automotive technical degree or similar preferred. This position requires a valid RI Driver’s License with a CDL Class B, or the ability to obtain same within 6 months of hire; current CDL Class holders are preferred. This position also requires a valid RI Department of Labor Hoisting Engineer’s License to operate heavy equipment and all necessary licenses, certificates, ratings, and endorsements, or the ability to obtain same within six (6) months of hire. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and background check required. The schedule for this 40 hour per week position is Monday through Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm with a half hour unpaid lunch. The position is affiliated with the local Council 94 union and starts at a rate of $27.09 per hour. Upon successful completion of the six-month probationary period, the salary increases to $27.79 per hour. This position is associated with the Employee Retirement System of Rhode Island Pension Program, which earns up to 12 vacation days, 15 sick days and 3 personal days a year on top of 13 paid holidays as well as offers full medical, vision and dental coverage. This position is also eligible for incentive pay up to an additional $3.00 per hour depending on skills certifications attained in accordance with the C94 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
