It acts as a community resource for bicycle mechanical education and accessible options for used and refurbished bicycle parts, accessories and bicycles to support physical activity, transportation and recreational activities on two wheels! Established as a program in 2006, the Charlotte Re-Cyclery is part of the circular economy reclaiming unwanted, discarded and donated bikes and transforming them into opportunities for mechanical education, transformative cycling experiences and refurbished bicycles to support the community. Each year TFKC diverts 3500+ bikes into bikes to be refurbished, or broken down into reusable parts and recyclable materials. The Charlotte Re-Cyclery is an inclusive space and resource available to ALL regardless of socioeconomic status, race, age, gender or background. Our program team is organized in two departments: the Sales Team and the Service Team to address the main functions of the program. The Sales Team (front end) oversees customer service and community engagement (greeting, fitting and selling bikes), shop inventory, support in community programs and clinics, new volunteer engagement and technical support for parts and compatibility. The Service Team (back end) oversees repair and maintenance services, lead on refurbish bicycles, advance mechanics volunteers, component inventory, recycling programs, technical support and education to staff, volunteers and participants Both Teams work together to provide excellent resources and customer service to customers, volunteers, youth and community members. All technicians work collaboratively under the management of the respective department Leads to complete the responsibilities of the Charlotte Re-Cyclery functions and supports the community through sales and mechanical resources. Priorities, Roles and Responsibilities.
Service Technician Responsibilities:
- Utilize conversation to understand the reason for the customers visit and how we can support them
- Organize and be aware current new, used and refurbished inventory
- Work with, coach and guide new volunteers to support in Re-Cyclery daily tasks
- Support shop online inventory
- Repair and maintain all types of bicycles including folding, ebikes, and cargo bikes
- Provide customers with accurate cost estimate quotes and maintenance suggestions
- Thoroughly and accurately complete bike builds, repairs, tune-ups, sales checks, and accessory installs on time and with the highest quality standards.
- Maintain organized, clean and efficient service area and floor space
- Assist with the daily operation of the shop, and customer service.
- Assist other technicians, volunteers and customers with technical questions and purchases when needed
- Support Sales team when needed
- Support in creating a space welcoming for ALL.
- Help manage donations, recycling and warehouse inventory balancing
- Receive phone calls
- Work with advanced volunteers to complete refurbished bikes
- Check over sales technician and volunteer built refurbished bikes
- Support bike sales through sizing, fitting and education on types of bikes.
- Balance Bikes to the warehouse
- Support mechanical needs of Trips For Kids Charlotte Programs both prior to and in-person, if needed
- Participate in staff meetings, outings, and monthly cleans
The Ideal Candidate:
- Passionate about cycling as well as promoting the benefits of a cycling lifestyle and culture to ALL, youth empowerment, social sustainability initiatives, and active community engagement on two wheels.
- Previous experience in bicycle sales and service retail/co-op setting with an understanding or interest in mechanical skills and an understanding of bicycle systems, service and compatibility.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Motivated work-ethic, and comfortable working both independently AND as a member of a team
- Organized and self-motivated to complete tasks.
- Ability to effectively teach, develop and guide others to the next level of mechanics and sales (be a leader to the community)
- Approachable and professional attitude to supporting the growth, development and collaborative connection of those around you.
- Flexibility in work habits to provide evening and weekend coverage as needed
- Ability to work rotating Saturday shifts (required)
- Preferred but not required – experience with e-bike mechanics to support TFKC programs
