JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for the design and fabrication of street and other signs.

MAJOR DUTIES

Designs, lays out, and fabricates traffic signs; cuts and lays out borders, numerals, letters, and symbols on prepared blank designs. Designs and manufactures traffic using sign design software program. Maintains inventory of sign materials. Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on sign making equipment. Sorts and verifies quantity and size of received materials; prepares orders for purchase as needed. Installs signs and signposts in accordance with MUTCD guidelines. Inspects street signs to determine repair or replacement needs. Cuts and trims limbs, foliage, etc. from around signs. Collects illegal signs placed on city right-of-way. Places required legal advertising signs for Planning department. Performs traffic studies; utilizes electronic counter to count cars at intersection. Performs sign repairs after normal work hours as needed. Performs traffic control at hazard and/or work sites; installs traffic control devices at emergency scenes and for special events. Assists in the installation of seasonal decorations. Paints streets and parking lots. Performs related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

18 year or older. High School Diploma, GED and/or equivalent work experience. Valid Drivers license. Sufficient experience usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of Class B license or ability to obtain.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

Knowledge of the materials, equipment, procedures, and practices employed in traffic sign design, construction, and installation. Knowledge of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices guidelines. Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs. Knowledge of city streets and geography. Skill in the use of hand and power tools. Skill in the fabrication and installation of road signs. Skill in oral and written communication.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

The work consists of related traffic sign fabrication, installation, and maintenance duties. Inclement weather conditions and heavy traffic around work sites contribute to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to perform technical duties in the installation, repair, and maintenance of road signs. Successful performance contributes to the safety and efficiency of city streets.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, stooping or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color. The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. Physicalstrength, ability, and mobility to perform all essential job functions with or without accommodation. Must be willing to work overtime, non-standard work hours, holidays, shifts, and weekends as necessary. Must be willing to be on-call.
