POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Maintenance Technician

  • Class 7 contributes to the success of Whitfield Foods by completing preventative maintenance and repair of plant equipment to ensure uninterrupted day-to-day operations.

. Must meet qualifications for Class 5, must have six years experience in industrial maintenance field. Must be proficient in troubleshooting and programming electrical components, to include variable frequency drives, and other electronic instrumentation. Must be proficient in refrigeration troubleshooting and pneumatic troubleshooting. Must have ability to read electrical and pneumatic drawings.

GENERAL FOOD SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

Must understand that Whitfield Foods is a food plant and, because of this, in everything we make, he/she has an obligation to produce safe, legal and wholesome products. Must understand the Food Safety Policy and that we operate under a specific Food Safety Management System. This means that employee must follow all our procedures exactly as written. Report any food safety issue or potential issue to management. Must attend any required food safety training (general or specific) and, if required, pass a competency test.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Maintain and repair mechanical equipment. Perform preventative maintenance tasks including lubrication, inspection, and adjustments. Perform welding tasks, troubleshooting and repair on pneumatics, hydraulics, plumbing, and electrical systems. Perform troubleshooting and maintenance of electrical systems, to include VFD, motor controls, AC/DC control circuits, RTD sensors. Document and notify management in the event of any condition that may pose a risk to food safety including physical, biological, or chemical hazards. Demonstrate knowledge and use of all machine safety switches and guards. Troubleshoot PLC’s. Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems with no supervision. Setup and install appropriate change parts when required. Adjust position and timing of all parts for the package being produced. Setup and install appropriate change parts when required.

Adjust support equipment including:

conveyor rails, case turners, and package sensors (photo eyes or proximity switches). Maintain a clean work area at all times. Ensures regulatory compliance of maintenance programs and processes with federal, state, local municipal and customer requirements. Supports the Maintenance Supervisor in the day-to-day operation of the maintenance department.

REQUIRED

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and

ABILITIES

Must meet qualifications for a Class 3 Maintenance Technician. Minimum of 4 years experience in industrial maintenance field with developed skills including: mechanical maintenance, welding, pneumatics, VFD setup, basic PLC troubleshooting, pump repair and installation, knowledge of working with boilers, cooling towers, HVAC, and ammonia compressors, and electrical repair to include installation of electrical pipes and control panels. Ability to think and make decisions quickly and effectively. Desire to constantly improve the quality of products and services offered by the Maintenance department. Ability to verbally communicate with effectiveness. Must be able distinguish (by sight, sound, touch, or other senses) whether his/her machine is operating correctly or is in a proper state of repair. Able to work in extreme temperatures and wet/humid environments. Flexible to work extended hours and weekends. Able to follow through and complete assigned tasks. Team oriented.

EXPERIENCE

Four years experience in Industrial Maintenance as a technician. Associates Degree in comparable field of study.

The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and steam handling equipment; on ladders or man lifts approximately 10 to 20 feet above the floor; in wet processing areas with damp floors, and occasionally in outside weather conditions. The employee may also be exposed to electrical shock when working with electrical components. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate (80-90 decibels). The manufacturing area is not climate controlled and temperatures vary from 50 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit depending on outside conditions.
