PositionPurpose:

Provides day-to-day monitoring and basic plant andpump/booster station operations, routine lab tests and basiccorrective and preventative maintenance activities.

PrimaryDuties/Responsibilities:

Operates equipment manually and throughinstrumentation panels, computer terminals and programmable logiccontrol units following process control procedures. Monitors andobserves operating conditions, records observations and data inshift log. Diagnoses basic operational problems and takescorrective action per procedure. Performs routine CLAIR (cleaning,lubrication, adjustment, inspection and minor repair) on machinesand related equipment which may include pumps, engines,centrifuges, generators, valves, gates, mixers, conveyors, blowers,dryers, chemical feed, odor control, disinfection equipment, vacuumfilters and belt presses. Reports and documents results of workperformed and enters into appropriate database. Promptly reportsany operational problems with machines or equipment to Lead orSupervisor. Collects water, wastewater, industrial waste,groundwater, sludge, residuals and/or gas samples according toschedule. Performs field tests (chemical, physical and biological)in order to pace chemical dosages for process and odor controlunits. Prepares chemical solutions, monitors supplies andrecommends reorder. Performs routine lab tests and prepares reportsper procedure. Performs routine instrument calibration for portablemeters including, but not limited to, dissolved oxygen, pH, H2S,percent oxygen, lower explosive limit. Learns to inspect andbecomes proficient at mechanical troubleshooting to determinerepairs needed. Dismantles equipment to gain access to and repairsdefective parts using hand tools, power tools and precisionmeasuring and testing devices. Re-assembles and tests equipmentensuring safe and efficient operating condition is restored. Learnsto troubleshoot hydraulic, pneumatic and electronic equipment andinstrumentation. Performs manual labor including cleaningequipment, facilities and grounds as required and properly disposesof waste according to safety and environmental policies. Operatesvehicles, mobile equipment and material handling equipment foroperational and maintenance purposes. Performs facility maintenanceand repair and may replace or install light bulbs, fluorescenttubes, damaged glass, windows, doors, partitions, ceiling or floortiles, door locks, carpet, and/or paint. Learns to estimate timeand material costs for various projects. May assist in other areasof facility as directed.

Work Environment:

Spends 100% of the timein operations environment. Typically spends 25 – 35% of timeexposed to outdoor and sometimes inclement weather. Company servicevehicles are used as required. Travels 1 – 2 times per year forcompany provided training. May be required to travel up to fiveconsecutive days. May serve rotational 24-hour emergency on-call.

Possible Work Hazards:

May be exposed to possible operationshazards including fumes, dust, toxic and caustic chemicals, noise,rotating machinery, high pressure and hot and cold temperatures,slippery surfaces, water and electrical hazards.

QualificationsEducation/Experience/Background:

High school or GED with theability to read, write and comprehend English (operational,process, safety and quality instructions) and be able to carry outverbal and written instructions. Six months to two years ofexperience in a related position with experience in a similarenvironment preferred with ability to comprehend specifications,blueprints and manuals. Experience using material handlingequipment, pressure gauges and precision measuring instruments.

Experience using power, pneumatic, hydraulic and hand tools andshop tools such as drill press, band saw, bench grinder, torquewrench preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Ability to performbasic mathematical calculations. Some vocational training andmechanical aptitude preferred, with the ability to read, interpretand record data from meters, gauges, scales, panels, computerconsoles and other equipment. Must have the ability to diagnosebasic and routine process and mechanical problems and take remedialcorrective action. Must have basic computer skills and have abilityto operate programs for process control, the Computer MaintenanceManagement System, and laboratory/industrial pretreatment QA/QC.Must consistently demonstrate the ability to learn andindependently perform assigned duties and meet or exceed productionand quality goals. Must demonstrate ability to work in a teamenvironment and willingness to assume additional or newresponsibilities readily. Must be able to serve rotational 24-houremergency on-call if required by site.

RequiredCertification/Licenses/Training:

Minimum water/wastewater licenseas required by regulatory agency at site. Must possess a validdriver’s license and a safe driving record. Employee Orientation,Departmental Operating Procedures, Safety, OSHA and QualityTraining.

HAZWOPER

(Hazardous Waste Operations and EmergencyResponse) Level I and II First Responder Certification if requiredby site. Obtain and maintain minimum water / wastewater operatorstate certification. Must become proficient in the care and use ofall site specific, facility required PPE (Personal ProtectionEquipment), including respirators, gas detectors, confined spaceequipment, etc.) Forklift Certification if required by site.

Training in operation of mechanical drives, hydraulic pumps andvalves, pneumatics, electronics and control systems. Obtain HVAC,Electrician, Plumber’s or other trade License if assigned to thatarea.

Note:

Tech will not perform duties unless properly licensed.

Training in the use of energy management systems as needed. Workstoward increasing skills in additional functional areas or inobtaining advanced skills / maintenance certifications. May performmore advanced functions as part of training and development.

Physical Requirements:

Amount of time spent – Standing 25%, Walking75% for as many as five miles per shift. Requires close visual andhearing observation to detect non-conformance and machinemalfunction. Constantly uses hands to finger, handle or feel andfrequently reaches with hands and arms. Works in various positions;works on ladders, catwalks, and supports at heights of 50 feetabove the ground; and works with hands extended above and belowhead and body up to 40 minutes using hand tools weighing up to 15pounds. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds (occasionally 60pounds) distances of 10 feet. Occasional stooping, bending orkneeling and entering confined spaces.
