General Description :

This position is a skilled position that specializes in creating, maintaining, and improving outdoor spaces all year round. Their work combines knowledge of horticulture, design, and machinery to help keep landscapes healthy, functional, and visually appealing.

Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for maintaining supplies and materials; inspecting work, general facilities maintenance tasks, minor equipment maintenance, and training.
  • Performs herbicide, pesticide, and fertilizer applications to all turf, trees, shrubs, and facilities as directed. Maintains all sprayers, spreaders, and pest control-related equipment.
  • Repairs or installs irrigation mains, clocks, valves, and sprinkler heads. May install complete irrigation systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair, or replace as required or instructed.
  • Responsible for setting up traffic control and work zone safety for employees working in and around State, Federal, DOT, and City rights-of-way while performing maintenance and operations duties.
  • Maintains inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment as directed or required, including oil, gasoline, filters, rags, cleaning supplies, shop tools, fertilizers, pesticides, and all other related equipment and supplies.
  • Performs minor tools and equipment maintenance, including greasing, sharpening, and changing blades, air and fuel filters, and tire pressures as required. Report all malfunctions and equipment failures to the Parks supervisor.
  • Operates tools and machinery such as lawnmowers, trimmers, blowers, tillers, and sometimes even small construction equipment.
  • Operates heavy equipment to transport materials, tools, equipment, and personnel to job sites and to remove debris or other materials.
  • Operates specialized equipment to support City operations, including backhoes, bucket trucks, dump trucks, tractors, bush hogs, mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, and any other related equipment
  • Responsible for the cleanup, maintenance, and operation of park facilities and fixtures, including sports fields, playgrounds, basketball courts, irrigation systems, retention ponds, sidewalks, restrooms, and buildings.
  • Mowing lawns, trimming trees and hedges, fertilizing plants, controlling pests, and maintaining irrigation systems.
  • Alert the manager of possible safety hazards in the field when discovered.
  • Plant maintenance: trimming, pruning, planting, watering, and replacing flowers, shrubs, and trees.
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays if needed.
  • May be required to work extended hours, especially during emergencies and natural disasters.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to identify pests (insects, fungus, disease, and weeds) as well as signs of mineral and nutrient deficiencies.
  • Ability to work with various chemicals and in various weather conditions, and evaluate weather conditions as they relate to the application of various chemicals.
  • Ability to identify critical issues quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to recognize safety hazards in the work involved and take precautionary measures to protect oneself and others.
  • Ability to follow directions both orally and in writing; communicate with fellow employees and supervisors.
Minimum Requirements:

Graduation from high school or equivalent. At least three (3) years of experience in landscape maintenance involving chemical application. Obtain FEMA IS100 and IS700 within six (6) months from the date of hire. Lawn and Ornamental Pesticide License. Must possess a Florida Driver’s License. Must reside within twenty-five (25) miles of Minneola’s city limits.

Physical Requirements:

Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction). Acceptable eyesight includes, but not limited to, depth perception, close, distance, peripheral, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid). Acceptable dexterity in fingers and hands. Ability to stand for long periods of time; ability to walk long distances; ability to sit for brief periods of time. Ability to twist, reach, bend, stoop, lift, twist, and climb ladders and stairs. Must be able to push, pull, lift, and carry up to fifty pounds (50). The job requires driving a city vehicle (transporting other employees at times) and operating the necessary equipment to perform essential functions.
