Highway Maintenance Technician I – District Five / DeLand Maintenance This position will perform Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic), use a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways and perform carpentry, masonry, and painting and/or assist in the assembly of highway signs.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision. Operates a motor vehicle to travel to and from work sites. Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment. Cleans and washes equipment. Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs. Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). The Successful Candidate will have the following required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to: + Read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms. + Maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures. + Communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions. + Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others. + Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds. + Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis. + Work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic. + Stand for an extended period of time; perform minor maintenance on vehicles. + Operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.

Other Job-Related Requirements:

+ Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies. + The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. + The incumbent must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates (optional). + The incumbent must also be trained and mut maintain training certification from the Department of Corrections to supervise inmates. + Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic)-Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Class “E” driver’s license is required.

This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following: 1. three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation; 2. any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years; 3. a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and 4. a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years. Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed.
