Position Information
The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled trades work in the maintenance or construction and renovation of County-owned buildings and facilities This Building Trades Technician I position in the Water System’s Central Maintenance group is vital to the daily operations of the Water System, providing Buildings & Ground support at the Marietta campus This encompasses maintenance responsibilities of the Customer Services, Laboratory, and Operations Buildings
Distinguishing Characteristics
Work at this level may involve carpentry, painting, plumbing, general mechanical repair work, drywall installation and finishing, acoustical ceiling repair and installation work depending on area of assignment
Essential Functions
May supervise contractors in performing maintenance or repair duties
May require the ability to communicate, report and complete work orders using technology such as a Smartphone or tablet and associated applications
Responsible for purchasing construction and maintenance related items; accountable for delivery of related financial paperwork to administrative staff
Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance of county buildings and facilities: reads blueprints or other design drawings to determine work to be performed; performs rough and finish carpentry, painting, electrical and plumbing work; and performs masonry and concrete work such as setting forms, mixing and pouring concrete, and laying modular block walls
Assists in ensuring that operation, construction, and maintenance of buildings, equipment, and systems are in compliance with applicable laws, codes, regulations, and standards: conducts maintenance inspections of buildings, equipment, grounds, and facilities to identify potential problems, unsafe conditions, and needed repairs; and initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations
Performs basic repair and maintenance of life safety systems, to include fire alarms and sprinklers, security systems such as burglar alarms and door access controls, generators, UPS power systems and other related equipment
Performs various electrical tasks: troubleshoots electrical problems; installs and replaces electrical wiring, receptacles and switches; establishes electrical connections; repairs electrical components; trips or replaces breaker; and replaces light bulbs and ballasts
Performs various plumbing tasks: troubleshoots plumbing problems: installs, repairs and replaces pump-mechanical equipment and plumbing systems and fixtures; clears and unblocks water lines and drains; repairs steam lines, toilets, sinks, faucets, drinking fountains, etc; solders pipes; and repairs plumbing leaks
Performs general maintenance and repairs to heating and air-conditioning systems: installs or repairs duct systems; replaces filters; and assists with the troubleshooting of heating and air-conditioning system problems
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required, supplemented by some vocational or technical training in one or more building trades; supplemented by one year of experience in building construction, maintenance and repair
Licenses and Certifications
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License
Physical Abilities
Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds)
