06/20/2025 JOB SUMMARY This position is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the Smyrna Community Center as well as the surrounding grounds. The normal work schedule for this position is Wednesday-Friday from 2pm-11pm and Saturday-Sunday from 10am-7pm subject to change based on scheduled activities or special events.

MAJOR DUTIES

Performs custodial duties at the Smyrna Community Center and surrounding grounds to include cleaning and mopping floors, vacuuming carpeted areas, hourly inspections/cleaning of restrooms and picking up trash in parking lots and surrounding grounds. Removes trash from containers, cleans kitchen facilities, and maintains cleanliness of center equipment. Sets up and breaks down event rooms and audiovisual equipment for clients. Performs minor maintenance and repairs, including doors, locks, equipment, and tables, while notifying the supervisor of issues and additional repairs. Performs light electrical and plumbing work, such as changing light bulbs and fixtures, cleaning vents, and notifying the supervisor of additional issues and repairs. Maintains current and accurate records for preventative maintenance, including an inventory of supplies. Ensures that cleaning equipment and chemicals are secured at all times while on duty for safety. Completes daily inspections of all areas within the community center, surrounding outdoor recreation amenities, and outdoor public restrooms to ensure that all areas are clean and safe. Completes daily log of tasks completed and submits to the supervisor. Greets the public and shows the facility as needed. Accepts shipments on behalf of the community center. Enforces policies at the facilities. Monitors work of the part-time staff evenings and weekends. Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

Knowledge of customer service techniques. Knowledge of computers and job-related software and equipment. Knowledge of facility operations, maintenance, and repair. Skill in interpersonal relations. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in providing customer service. Skill in operating equipment. Skill in interacting with management and co-workers to determine best practices of the facilities.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Facility Manager assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include Parks & Recreation policies and procedures, City of Smyrna ordinances, and human resources policies. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

The work consists of various maintenance and custodial duties. Keeping such a large facility clean and safe all of the time contributes to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to clean and maintain the facility. Success in this position contributes to customers enjoying a clean and safe recreational facility during operating hours.

CONTACTS

Contacts are typically with Facilities Manager, other Maintenance Technicians, Facility Event Coordinator, Administrative Coordinator, Receptionist, part-time attendants, vendors, and general public. Contacts are typically to provide services and to give or exchange information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed while typically sitting, standing, stooping, bending, or crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light objects and occasionally lifts heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes a sense of smell. The work is typically performed in and around a community center, which can be noisy. The work can also be performed outdoors and occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, and grease; machinery with moving parts; and contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent is required; and Less than one year of related experience required; or Any equivalent combination of education, experience, training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work. Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Must successfully pass criminal background and motor vehicle record check.
