JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of this job is to install, maintain, and repair City of Covington traffic signs and pavement markings. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, fabricating and erecting signs painting intersections, railroad crossings, installing traffic counters placing traffic cones and performing additional tasks as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists with the installing regulatory, warning, guide, construction, detour, and specialty signs. Assists of fabricating and mounting signs of various types using proper materials and equipment. Assists in operating grinder to remove old pavement markings. Assists with laying out and installing thermoplastic and paint pavement markings, including arrows, stop bars, railroad crossings, curb and crosswalks. Operates striping machine for various jobs. Removes sight restrictions from intersections and installs ceramic buttons and raised markers. Assists in traffic control, including flagging operations and placement of cones or barricades. Completes work orders and daily reports as required. Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

(A) Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and (B) Four (5) years of experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair. (C) Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Transportation Public Works Department. Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended period of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess at least a valid driver’s license and CDL A certification. Must have a good driving record for the last 3 years to be insurable by the City’s insurance. Has general knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the Transportation Public Works Department On call is required Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Level IA Certified

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Motorized vehicles and equipment, including: dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, street sweeper, Jetter/inductor truck, street roller, powerlift, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, propane kettle, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, ditch witch.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
