Organization Overview:

The Martha’s Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA) isa public authority that provides year-round public transit service tothe six towns of Martha’s Vineyard. The VTA’s transportation servicesconsist of both fixed route and paratransit services (known as the”Lift”). The VTA also runs a weekly van service to Boston area medicalfacilities. The VTA is one of the first authorities in MA to launch anelectric fleet and hopes to continue to be a leader among Massachusettstransit authroities in infrastructure advancements while maintaining acomfortable, reliable and safe rider experience.

Position Summary:

Theentry level maintenance technician supports the lead technician andservice coordinator in servicing and repairing the entire VTA fleetthrough their basic understanding of automotive systems and components.

Much of the work in this position will be on medium/heavy duty dieseland gasoline vehicles. The individual must be motivated and detailoriented, and possess a desire learn. Entry level mechanics have anopportunity for training on electric buses, and the VTA will supporttechnicians in acquiring a Commercial Driver’s Licence (CDL).

Compensation:

$25.00 – $30.00 per hour, Pay commensurate withexperience Eligible for overtime pay and VTA benefits Summarized below

Primary Responsibilities:

All employees are required to follow proper,lawful procedures while carrying out their duties, as outlined in theVTA Personnel Policy Manual.

Essential duties and responsibilitiesinclude:

Conduct basic inspections and diagnostic tests on vehicles;Perform routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations,and fluid checks; Removes, cleans, repairs, reinstalls and adjusts allvehicle components; Assist senior technicians with repairs andreplacements of vehicle components; Maintain cleanliness andorganization of the work area; Document all work performed and partsused in vehicle repair orders; Follow safety protocols and guidelines toensure a safe working environment; Communicate effectively withcoworkers; Safely uses all power and hand-held mechanic’s tools;Evaluates completed work and conducts inspection of equipment prior tore-lease back into service; Cleans exterior of all Authority-maintainedvehicles and fuel as needed, prior to release back into service; Addslubricants and other fluids to all Authority-maintained vehicles asneeded, prior to release back into service; Strives to complete work andreturn vehicle to service before end of shift; Fuels maintenancedepartment vehicles and others as needed; Cleans and maintainsAuthority-issued uniforms in a safe, responsible manner; Attendstraining classes at VTA’s expense, as required; Miscellaneous buildingmaintenance including, but not limited to changing lightbulbs, hangingpictures, plowing and the like, etc;

Position Requirements:

Validdriver’s license or ability to obtain, and a clear driving record. Thisposition is subject to pre- and post-employment drug testing. Highschool diploma or equivalent in progress, vocational mechanical trainingand/or direct fleet repair experience. Must have the ability to read,interpret and analyze maintenance manuals, wiring diagrams, trademanuals, governmental regulations, and other documents. Ability to add,subtract, multiply and divide figures, and calculate figures and amountssuch as percentages and averages. Ability to solve practical problemsand deal with a variety of variables in situations where limitedinformation exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructionsfurnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Strong willingness to learnand take direction from experienced technicians; Good problem-solvingskills and attention to detail; Ability to work in a fast-pacedenvironment and manage multiple tasks.
