Operate and maintain machinery and equipment to maintain electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems within our Detention Center. Examples of Duties Performs general plumbing work; maintains plumbing systems, including installing water and sanitary fixtures and equipment; changes faucet washers, stems, seals, etc.; flushes and clears clogged lines, using rotor machines or hand tools; repairs toilets by changing tank bulbs, overflow tubes, guide wires, etc.; repairs water coolers Performs general electrical work; installs electrical conduits and fittings, bending conduits as necessary; routes and pulls wiring for electrical, telephone, computer, intercom, and alarm systems; repairs electrical appliances; replaces faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators etc Performs general mechanical system work; Installs and maintains heat, ventilation and air conditioning systems in County buildings and facilities; checks thermostats, changes belts, bearings, motors, filters, compressors, etc.; cleans coils; monitors air humidity and ventilation. Serves on call 24 hours for a period of seven days or more (upon completion of appropriate training) Serves on stand-by during adverse weather conditions and emergencies Operates motor vehicles Minimum Qualifications Graduation from high school or GED and one and one-half (1.5) years of experience and/or training in maintenance or building trades work; or an equivalent combination of education training, and experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of the principles of organization, administration and supervision Knowledge of the procedures, materials and equipment related to the plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, painting and grounds maintenance trades Knowledge of approved electrical methods, practices, code requirements and safety standards Knowledge of heat, ventilation and air conditioning system installation and maintenance Knowledge of County purchasing policies and procedures Ability to use and care for a variety of hand and power tools necessary to perform plumbing, masonry, electrical, HVAC, carpentry and grounds maintenance tasks Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with the general public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
Conditions of Employment:
Must be able to obtain a North Carolina Fire Sprinkler Maintenance Technician license within two (3) years of hire. Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver’s license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire. Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment.
