In this role, you will design, fabricate, and maintain traffic and transportation signage using industry-standard software and equipment throughout the City of Raleigh. The Traffic Engineering Group at the City of Raleigh is dedicated to creating a safe, efficient, and accessible transportation network for all residents and visitors. This team specializes in the fabrication, installation and maintenance of traffic signs, pavement markings, and the collection of critical traffic data to guide decision-making. By combining technical expertise and a commitment to service, the group plays a vital role in improving mobility and safety across the city’s growing transportation network.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled technical tasks related to the fabrication, design, maintenance, and repair of traffic and transportation signage. Utilizes design software such as FlexiSIGN, Adobe Creative Suite, and CorelDRAW, as well as sign-making equipment including Roland and Mimaki printers, plotters, and other large-format printing devicesAssists in the creation of signage by interpreting design specifications and developing layout concepts to meet project requirements. Reviews, prioritizes, and organizes work assignments to ensure efficient workflow and timely project completionMonitors inventory levels of sign-making materials and supplies, tracks usage, and provides recommendations for replenishment to maintain operational readiness. Performs other related duties as assigned, in support of departmental goals and objectivesDesigns, fabricates, and repairs traffic and roadway signage using software such as FlexiSIGN, Adobe Creative Suite, and CorelDRAWOperates and maintains large-format printing equipment, including Roland and Mimaki printers, plotters, and related sign-making toolsReviews, prioritizes, and organizes daily work orders to ensure deadlines and quality standards are metPerform additional duties as required in support of departmental operations and public safety

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of graphic design and layoutTraffic and roadway signage standards (e.g., MUTCD – Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices)Operation and maintenance of large-format printing equipment (e.g., Roland printers, plotters)Materials and substrates commonly used in sign fabrication (e.g., vinyl, reflective sheeting, aluminum)Safety procedures and protocols related to sign fabrication and installationInventory control practices and basic supply chain managementFile formats and design workflows for print productionSkill in: Proficient in design software including FlexiSIGN, Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop), and CorelDRAWOperating large-format printers, laminators, cutters, and plottersStrong attention to detail in both design and production workEffective time management and ability to prioritize tasksBasic mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and maintaining equipmentCompetency in reading and interpreting technical drawings and specificationsStrong communication skills for coordinating with team members and departmentsAbility to: Follow technical instructions and design specifications accuratelyManage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlinesWork independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively in a team settingMaintain organized records of jobs, inventory, and maintenance logsLift and move materials and signage (within standard physical requirements)Adapt to new technologies, processes, and design trends

ADA and Other Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work:

Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.
