Description of Work The Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center (ASC) houses the regulatory laboratories for the Department of Agriculture. The labs consist of the Food & Drug Protection Division Chemistry, Microbiology, and Pesticide Residue labs; the Veterinary Division Animal Disease Diagnostic lab; the Standards Division Weights and Measures lab, and the Standards Division Fuel Quality testing lab. These laboratories form the scientific basis for all regulatory work performed by the Department ensuring consumer protection for human and animal food, commerce, and animal health. The Facility Maintenance section is responsible for all buildings and maintenance for the ASC and the three veterinary division’s satellite laboratories located in Monroe, Elkin and Fletcher, NC. The Maintenance Construction Technician III performs maintenance and repairs of the general physical building, mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems, equipment, and may occasionally assist with the surrounding grounds. This includes monitoring all operating systems including chillers, boilers, HVAC, and incinerators, and repairing plumbing and electrical issues. •Some overnight travel may be required throughout the state; occasional work may be required after hours. To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following: Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in general building maintenance and/or the repair of equipment including boilers, chillers, and/or HVAC systems.
Ability to use tools required for at least two of the following moderately complex trades: HVAC, plumbing, and/or electrical.
Ability to arrive at the ASC facility within 60 minutes.
Ability to operate common types of machine shop or woodworking power equipment.
Ability to read and interpret building codes and blueprints.
Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
Ability to communicate in oral and written form.
Ability to estimate the amount and value of needed repairs. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both. High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
