JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for cleaning all public areas, special event areas, including trash removal, and moving of furniture and other items. Assists with event set up and take down, furniture and office moves, and occasionally moving exhibit pieces. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works with cleaning chemicals, mechanical equipment such as vacuum cleaners. Additional seasonal work may include lawn mowing, weeding, snow shoveling, and salting sidewalks at building entrances.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Cleaning

  • vacuuming, mopping, dusting, sweeping, cleaning bathrooms, emptying trash, and maintaining general cleanliness of the Museum, Planetarium, and Eisenhart Auditorium. Building Maintenance
  • minor repairs, including replacing light bulbs or notifying managers about needed repairs. Event Setup & Breakdown
  • Preparing for events in the Museum, Planetarium, and Eisenhart Auditorium by arranging furniture, setting up tables and chairs, and removing decorations. Removing furniture after an event and returning it to areas for regular daily use. Groundskeeping
  • Mowing, weeding, leaf removal, snow shoveling, and salting of sidewalks.

Basic audiovisual equipment set-up. (Instruction provided.)

Informational/Technical/Equipment:

Ability to operate, care for, and maintain cleaning equipment.

Communications:

Ability to communicate effectively, politely, professionally, and comfortably with all guests and staff. Ability to read and comprehend written instructions, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Decision Making and Reasoning Ability:

Must be dependable, organized, and able to adapt to changing demands and environments. Be able to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instructions delivered in written or verbal form. Ability to solve problems and troubleshoot.

Time Management:

Ability to meet established deadlines. Ability to effectively transition between multiple duties. Ability to take initiative and identify projects in need of completion.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; stand; bend; climb; to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; stoop; kneel; and crouch. The Facilities Technician is regularly required to move throughout the building; ascend and descend stairs. Must occasionally lift and/or move over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to work outside in various states of weather.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

During high visitation periods, the noise level in public areas can be loud due to large numbers of people and related activities. There may be occasional exposure to bodily fluids during the cleaning and removal process.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience/Requirements:

High school diploma (or equivalent education or combination of experience and education) preferred. One year of experience is preferred.
