JOB SUMMARY
This position assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of campus-wide buildings and facilities; assists in performing general carpentry, repairs, maintenance or construction work; assists skilled technicians in performing minor repairs of plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems to maintain campus facilities; independently performs maintenance tasks requiring a limited degree of professional skill; and performs related work as required. This class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assists skilled technicians in performing maintenance and repair tasks such as carpentry, locksmith, electricity, heating, plumbing, venting and air conditioning (HVAC). Assists with hanging sheetrock, laying tile, carpet, linoleum, etc., as needed. Cleans and maintains tools and equipment. Loads and unloads equipment and supplies. Troubleshoots and diagnoses routine equipment and system problems; schedules and performs routine repair work or parts replacement. Paints walls and other surfaces as needed. Moves furniture and other heavy items as requested. Maintains accurate records on maintenance/repair work completed. Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK
High school diploma or GED. One (1) year of experience in repairs and maintenance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of how to properly perform manual tasks. Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the tasks performed and equipment employed. Skill in the use of various trade tools and equipment. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to perform heavy manual labor. Ability to perform arithmetic. Ability to communicate effectively. Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the area of employment. Knowledge of the concepts and techniques of on-the-job training. Ability to organize, plan and prioritize work.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis. May be required to use a ladder or scaffolding. May be required to occasionally work in small, hard to reach spaces. Work is performed both inside a facility and outdoors in all weather conditions. Some hazardous situations may exist based on work to be performed.
