Description:
JOB SUMMARY

Performs routine installation, repair, and maintenance duties on the City’s streetlight and traffic signal systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Install and maintain, repair traffic signals; including programming, wiring, troubleshooting; Perform routine preventative maintenance programs on traffic signals; Installs traffic loop detection systems; or other detection systems; Program various types of computerized traffic signal controllers; Tests traffic signal controllers and related equipment to identify defects in electric, electronic, and electro-mechanical equipment; Assists in upgrading existing installations and assists with pre-installation, maintenance, and repair duties on equipment in the shop; Maintains work records including complaint resolutions, maintenance, repair and replacement logs, vehicle inspection forms, daily work logs and other documentation; Sets up traffic control and places traffic barricades, safety cones, markers, or signs according to the City policy; alerts employees/citizens of work areas or other potential hazards; Perform all other duties in the traffic section as needed including, signing and traffic signal operations, and traffic counts; Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; Maintains work records including complaint resolutions, maintenance, repair and replacement logs, vehicle inspection forms, daily work logs and other documentation.

Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:

Thorough knowledge and the use of testing equipment, instruments, used in the traffic signal installation and maintenance; Skill in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signal systems; Knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and procedures; Knowledge of work zone safety; Knowledge of underground utility identification practices; Skill in reading and interpreting electrical plans, diagrams, and schematics; Must possess computer application skills that at a minimum include Microsoft Office Suite products including Word and Excel; Knowledge of the “Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices” (MUTCD).

ABILITY:

Ability to operate dump trucks and other maintenance equipment as needed; Ability to operate aerial platform and other lift trucks; Ability to uses common hand tools, such as handsaws, strippers, etc., to install parts and repair equipment; Ability to operate a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in department projects and activities, which may include bucket truck, jackhammers, saws and various power and hand tools; Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs; Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions; participates in meetings; Ability to write clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar; able to read and interpret written information; Ability to follow instructions, responds to management direction; completes tasks on time or notifies appropriate person with an alternate plan; Ability to meet scheduling and attendance requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Traffic Signal Technician I; Valid Commercial Driver License, Class B preferred. Without Class B, applicant selected will be given 6 months to obtain a CDL from date of hire.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/OR EXPERIENCE

Experience in repair and maintenance of traffic signal equipment such as signal contgrollers, communication devices and other peripherals used in the operation, repair and maintenance of traffic signal operations. Completion of a technical school program in electronics may substitute for one year of required experience. Must obtain Work Zone and Level 1 IMSA certification within one year. Valid Class B Driver’s License preferred.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/OR EXPERIENCE

Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two year-college or technical school; or two to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
