As a Diesel Mechanic, you will be instrumental in promoting good government in DeKalb County.

Duties include:

Operate or use various machinery, equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments; operates and maintains maintenance equipment; maintains a mechanics toolbox; and maintains equipment-specific tools.
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance; changes oil, hydraulic fluid, air filters, fuel filters, and other expendables as required; inspects seals, hoses, and tires for wear or damage; and arranges replacement as needed.
Perform equipment inspections; inspects and tests all equipment systems, including drive train, engine operation, transmission operation, suspension, steering, brakes, hydraulics, electrical system, and HVAC; completes or revises work order for repairs; obtains (pulls, fabricates, or orders) required parts; and inspects completed work.
Repair heavy equipment; gathers information from operator reports, equipment manuals, and fault codes; troubleshoots and diagnoses electrical, hydraulic and engine problems; utilizes multi-meter, test light, pressure gauges, flow meters, vacuum and compression gauges, etc.; identifies items and systems needing repair; completes required repairs; and ensures equipment operation and performance is within specified limits.
Weld and fabricate parts; welds broken parts; fabricates replacement parts; replaces parts or structures to vehicles; and verifies parts operate according to specifications.
Prepare and commission new equipment and accessories; completes records for new equipment; adds stencil numbers; and installs accessories such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, etc.
Decommission equipment; removes County decals, equipment, accessories, and other property; and ensures equipment is ready for disposition.

To be minimally qualified, you must have the following:
High school diploma or GED, with vocational training or technical training in automotive repair or a related field
Three years of automotive, heavy truck, or heavy equipment maintenance repair experience including one year at the journeyman level in the repair and maintenance of gas and diesel powered heavy trucks, road maintenance equipment, and other related equipment
You will qualify if you have any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job

Specific License or Certification Required:

You must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. Some positions may be required to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) appropriate for the level of equipment operated within six (6) months of starting employment in this classification
