Field Service Technician Reports To:

Service Manager Role Overview:

The Generator Technician is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing generators while delivering outstanding customer service and maintaining detailed service records.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on generators. Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical and mechanical issues, including alternators, wiring, safety systems, shutdown switches, and batteries. Perform load bank testing, with knowledge of reactive and resistive load testing. Understand and work with Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) systems and generator controls. Troubleshoot and repair engines from various manufacturers such as Kohler, Cummins, Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, John Deere, Doosan, MTU, and Volvo. Clearly and professionally explain technical issues and solutions to customers of all knowledge levels. Collaborate and communicate effectively with internal staff, manufacturers, and vendors. Accurately document all service activities, expenses, and hours worked. Provide guidance and training to junior technicians. Complete and submit daily service reports, time logs, and expense records. Perform other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience:

At least 5 years of hands-on experience in servicing and repairing engines (all fuel types), including work on transfer switches and switchgear. Strong mechanical aptitude. Proficient in using an electrician’s voltmeter. Comfortable with various tools and both standard and metric measurements. Solid understanding of both electrical and mechanical systems. Skilled in using computers and service software in the field. Able to work effectively under pressure and in varying weather conditions, with availability 24/7. Capable of managing multiple responsibilities safely and efficiently. Trained in operating heavy machinery and forklifts per OSHA standards. Independent and self-reliant; works well with minimal supervision. Willing to travel and work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts. Well-organized and able to manage time effectively. Motivated by customer satisfaction, with a strong reputation for adhering to procedures and solving complex generator issues in the field.
