Job Summary
Work involves skilled automotive and equipment maintenance and repair work requiring the completion of skilled tasks. Position assists Master Mechanics as well as works independently performing repairs and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, tractors, bulldozers, motor graders, backhoes and other gasoline or diesel-powered equipment owned by the County. This position is responsible for the care and security of tools and maintenance of the work area.
Performs routine and preventative maintenance (i.e., lubrication, oil and filter changes) and general repairs to motor vehicles, light, medium and heavy trucks, gasoline and diesel engines and construction equipment.
Performs maintenance inspections.
Performs some electric and acetylene welding and burning.
Performs sheet metal, paint and body repairs.
Performs tire maintenance including changing and repair.
Performs daily/routine maintenance and fueling on light, medium and heavy equipment.
Assists equipment operators and shop personnel as needed.
Operates shop tools and moves equipment and parts in and out of shop work area; hoists and lifts parts and equipment into place.
Operates power saws and cutting torches to cut and bend iron rods, bars, sheets and other materials to specified lengths and shapes.
Welds, chips slag from welds; grinds and buffs edges and surfaces required for repair, fabrication for fitting and finishing.
Operates drill press to remove sleeves and shafts; drills holes in rods, plates and other surfaces.
Dismantles equipment and helps in repair and reassembly; cleans parts; performs welding or torching as needed.
Operates forge and welding equipment to build up worn or broken blades, cutting edges and attachments to tools and equipment.
Replaces hydraulic hoses, tool parts and equipment components.
Changes oil and oil filters; replaces air filters.
Performs chassis lubrications.
Cleans shop tools and equipment; and maintains a safe and functional work area.
Helps unload stocks, shop supplies and parts and performs inventory of required supplies and parts.
Attends classes, studies, learns and performs skilled work.
Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner.
Performs all other duties as assigned by supervision.
Qualifications and Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent
A minimum of one year’s related training or experience equipment maintenance and repair
One year of on the job experience operating multiple types of equipment
Valid Driver’s License
Must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with hazardous material and tanker endorsements within a period of time specified by the department head following employment.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License, hazardous materials endorsement, tanker endorsement
Completion of trade school courses in automotive or diesel equipment repair and maintenance Physical Demands & Work Environment
WORKING CONDITIONS
Most of work is performed outdoors. Subject to extremes in weather conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is heavy to very heavy in nature and consists of standing, lifting, carrying, pushing, bending, walking and using hand and fingers to operate tools. Must have good vision to read and make necessary repairs.
