Minimum Qualifications:

Associate degree in heavy equipment technology or a related field; supplemented by one year of experience in heavy equipment service repairs; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Resumes are welcomed without personal and identifiable information.

Specific License or Certification Required:

Valid state of Georgia Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger and hazardous endorsements (to be obtained within six (6) months of employment); Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification for heavy trucks is preferred.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:

Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

The examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience, accomplished by analysis of the application. The application must document that the applicant possesses the minimum knowledge, skills, education, and experience as listed to be rated as qualified. Purpose of Classification:

The purpose of this classification is to perform duties related to servicing and repairing heavy trucks and off-road equipment, including inspecting, repairing, and maintaining heavy equipment, such as bulldozers, asphalt spreaders, mechanical loaders, trailers, tractors, and heavy trucks; overhauling and rebuilding heavy trucks and equipment; and loading, unloading, and hauling heavy equipment. Heavy Equipment Technician is distinguished from Equipment Mechanic Supervisor in that the former performs duties related to heavy trucks and off-road equipment service and repair, whereas the latter supervises assigned staff performing automotive and/or heavy equipment service and repair.

Essential Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Provides lead direction to assigned staff, including establishing workloads, prioritizing work assignments, monitoring employee performance, interpreting policies and procedures, and resolving staff issues. Services or replaces components in heavy equipment systems, such as brake, electrical, heating and cooling, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, final drives, bulldozer undercarriages, and transmission. Troubleshoots, diagnoses, repairs, overhauls and tests brake systems, truck steering and suspension systems, heating and cooling systems, gas and diesel internal combustion engines, and transmission and axel assemblies. Diagnoses off-road equipment failure, whether powertrain, hydraulic, undercarriage, final drive, or electronic problems. Loads, unloads, and transports heavy trucks and equipment in order to perform maintenance and repair work. Performs preventive maintenance on heavy trucks and equipment, including changing all oils and filters; greasing; and checking all fluids, belts hoses, and lights. Maintains all repair records, including parts, fluids, labor, repair work, and mileage. Performs cleanup at end of day or when job is completed, including cleaning tools, putting tools in proper storage areas, and sweeping floors.
