Job Description The Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Division, within the Department of Fire Services, oversees the training, and operational support to the six district hazmat teams as well as the Joint Hazardous Incident Response Team (JHIRT) and the Technical Support Unit (TSU). The Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Division is seeking part-time applicants to coordinate and provide technical support, including but not limited to inspection, validation, repairs, and documentation of SCBA, meters, and other equipment. The Technician should be available to work at least an average of 20 hours per week. This is a part-time contract position with no benefits The Technical Support position duties include: Works in an area that requires specialized training and/or external or manufacturer’s certification(s). May be assigned to operate critical equipment and perform systems maintenance. May be assigned to interpret and provide guidance on complex fire code and standards. May be assigned to conduct maintenance, inspections, inventory, and repairs that may include but not be limited to SCBA, fire extinguisher, meters, electrical systems, welding/hotworks, drones, and/or IT systems. May be assigned to perform

SCBA/SEA

fit testing. May be assigned to conduct inspection, testing and validation of protective gear. May be assigned to calibrate equipment. May be assigned to serve as a commercial driver. May be assigned to operate complex equipment at emergency and scheduled events. May be assigned to maintain a database, which could include call logs, testing records, inventory, reports or other similar data tracking. May be assigned to update software, diagnose and troubleshoot complex IT systems, or similar duties

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) Two years’ experience as a DFS employee, a firefighter, a MA Hazardous Materials Technician, a commercial driver or in a fire service leadership position. Possession of a valid Driver’s License. Training or Certification appropriate to the assignment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to solve complex problems and make sound decisions. Able to respond to incidents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week when on-call. Able to thrive in a time sensitive, challenging and rapidly changing environment. Must be able and willing to travel to assigned work location, which could be any community in the Commonwealth.

Able to work all shifts:

days, nights and/or weekends, as assigned. Some positions may require availability at least one weekend day per month. Successful completion of all training and testing required by DFS, including maintaining continuous refresher training as may be required. Knowledge and experience in a specific fire area of expertise. Ability to work as a team with others performing like duties to meet the organizational objectives. Able to take direction and follow instructions without deviating from planned objectives. Able to accomplish assigned work with little or no supervision.
