MAJOR FUNCTIONS
Under the leadership of the Director of Public Works. This is a position requiring manual labor duties of skilled and semiskilled nature. Ongoing duties will involve new construction, maintenance, equipment repair, mowing, rights-of-way and drainage. Using tools, maintenance equipment, construction equipment, landscaping equipment and other various hand and power tools are daily duties. All work is performed in the elements including heat, cold, rain and other inclement weather. This is an emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair, and recover the City before, during, and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, tropical storm, winter storm, ice storm, etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Builds forms, headwalls and installs cement block and brick.
Loads, secures and unloads equipment, supplies, tools and materials.
Spreads asphalt in patching potholes in road surfaces. Flags and directs traffic and assist in setting up work zones.
Cleans culverts, gutters, ditches, swales, storm drains, canals and many other similar jobs. Mows, fertilizes, sprays and trims grass.
Removes and replaces sod, sprinkler heads, catch basins, etc. Digs trenches, removes concrete, trims and prunes trees and shrubbery. Fertilizes and sprays herbicides and other chemicals.
Installs storm drainage pipes, curb and gutters and sidewalks.
General manual labor work. Collects trash and debris.
Custodial types of duties such as cleaning windows, emptying trash, moving tables, etc. .
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge and skills in the use of tools and equipment typical of manual labor work. Ability to understand and carry out multi-step oral and written instructions. Ability to operate mowers, tractors, trucks, and variety of other hand tools and equipment (power and manual) typically used in construction.
Ability to operate power and manual equipment typically used in landscaping, irrigation, grounds keeping and right-of-way maintenance.
Sufficient physical strength to perform heavy manual labor work.
Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative and team-focused working relationships with team members, leadership, other departments and the general public.
Knowledge and skills in the repair and maintenance of asphalt, concrete work, drainage systems, and grounds maintenance.
Ability to build basic frames for construction and other basic woodworking skills.
Ability to shovel, spread and prepare surfaces for concrete and asphalt.
Ability to spread and level concrete.
Ability to work with various types of chemicals used in maintenance and surface work.
Knowledge of safe operations in and around heavy traffic areas.
Ability to measure and make basic mathematical calculations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Two (2) years experience in manual labor, maintenance and construction work. Valid Driver’s license. Maintenance of Traffic Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year preferred. A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
