Description The Maintenance Worker II is responsible for performing semi-skilled manual maintenance and construction work as assigned and driving/operating automobiles and pick-up trucks. Work assigned is generally within the public works environment. Performs assignments as part of public works crew and works in harmony with other trades persons and equipment. May be required to perform tasks involving heavy labor as needed. Examples of Duties The following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility but shall not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload. Repairs holes in paved or unpaved road with asphalt or lime rock.
Install road signs.
Clears trees, brush and other vegetation within County Right-Of-Way.
Jackhammers concrete and asphalt as required and loads debris on trucks.
Occasionally uses plate compactor or “jumping jack” compactors, as necessary.
Sweeps and uses air blower to remove debris from roadway and sidewalks.
Empties trash cans and loads trash and other material on truck.
Removes, transports and handles dead animals on roadways.
Maintains grounds; by raking, mowing, planting and watering grounds as required.
Performs hedge and tree trimming.
Prepares ground for sod placement and lays sod as required.
Performs MOT duties for in house crews performing work within County Right of Ways. Regular attendance with the ability to work a five (5) day, forty (40) hour flex time work week.
May perform “on-call” duties at any time of the day or night as required for emergency response. Emergency Response
County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description. Typical Qualifications Minimum Qualifications High School graduate or equivalent Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable general equivalency diploma (GED).
Minimum of two (2) years of experience in performing manual labor associated with road maintenance of construction activities. Licenses, Certifications or Registrations Must possess a valid Florida Class E driver’s license and be insurable by the current insurance carrier.
Must possess or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment:
Florida Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Certification.
NIMS/Incident Command Courses IS100, IS200 and IS700 A combination of education, training and experience may be substituted at the County’s discretion. Required Competencies
Knowledge of:
Principles and methods of safely operating hand tools, jack hammers, saws, and other pieces of field equipment/tools.
Safe practices and methods used in public works construction and maintenance activities.
Ability to:
Safely drive and navigate light duty vehicles, with or without a trailer attached.
Perform manual labor.
Understand and follow written and oral instructions from supervisors or management personnel.
Interact with co-workers, supervisors and the public in a professional and courteous manner. Supplemental Information Environmental Conditions Works in an outdoor environment at work site in various weather conditions with potential exposure to dust, dirt, noise, having rain and wind, and vibration. Works in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to the incumbents’ co-workers or others. Physical Demands Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrective lenses), walking, balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, handling, lifting, repetitive motion, speaking, visual acuity, standing, bending, stooping, driving, operating equipment, eye hand and foot coordination.
Heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
