Position Summary:

The Public Works Service Worker I performs entry-level manual labor to support the maintenance and repair of City infrastructure including streets, parks, beach accesses, rights-of-way, and facilities. Duties include landscaping, cleaning, minor construction, and event support. Work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions, with frequent public interaction in a tourism-driven environment. This position operates tools, light equipment, and City vehicles under close supervision and follows all safety protocols.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform routine maintenance and repairs on City infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, signs, parks, beach accesses, rights-of-way, stormwater systems and public facilities Operate hand tools, power tools, and light equipment safely. Assist with landscaping, tree trimming, and vegetation management along public rights-of-way and City properties. Clean and maintain public facilities, restrooms, and beach accesses. Support setup and takedown of City events, including traffic control, signage, barricades, and general labor. Remove trash, debris, and litter from public spaces. Load and unload materials, supplies, and equipment for daily operations. Perform inspections and report issues such as hazards, damage, or unsafe conditions to supervisors. Assist with minor construction projects including concrete work, fence repairs, and facility improvements. Respond to weather-related emergency situations such as flooding, down trees, or storm clean-up, occasionally outside of working hours. Interact with the public in a courteous and professional manner. Follow all City safety protocols and procedures in the performance of daily tasks. Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED required. Valid Florida Driver’s License and acceptable driving record. Previous experience in public works, maintenance, groundskeeping, or construction is desirable but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Basic knowledge of tools, equipment, and techniques used in public works maintenance.
  • Ability to operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and light equipment safely.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact courteously with the public, co-workers, and supervisors.
  • Willingness to learn and follow all City safety protocols and procedures.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:

Work is typically performed outdoors in a coastal environment with frequent exposure to heat, humidity, rain, strong sun, and wind. Exposure to loud noise, dust, sand, fumes, pollen, and traffic is common. May occasionally work near moving mechanical parts or in high-traffic areas. Subject to emergency call-outs, and may be required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays during special events or storm responses. Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, kneeling, and climbing. Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Regular use of hand tools and motorized equipment; must have sufficient hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. Requires vision and hearing sufficient to safely perform duties in active work zones and around equipment. Must be able to work for extended periods in physically demanding conditions. Hours are Sunday to Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Special Requirements Emergency Response Status:

As a condition of employment, City of Anna Maria employees may be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.
