DEPARTMENT
Parks and Streets This position reports to: Parks and Streets Manager General Description General physical work involved in a variety of skilled parks and streets and grounds maintenance and repair activities including, but not limited to, cleaning storm drains, patching streets, installing traffic signs, painting curbs, spreading sand and gravel, mowing, edging, trimming, disposing of debris and other similar functions on the Town’s twenty-two (22) miles of streets, their related rights-of-way and storm drainage systems, and in the Town’s parks, medians, soccer fields, playgrounds, and facility grounds. Work is performed with some latitude and the use of some independent judgment within established standards and practices. Essential Functions Inspect and/or repairs streets and drainage systems at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly Perform routine inspections, clean equipment and perform preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or needed repairs to the Department Head Drive trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, gravel and sand; operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the parks and streets maintenance division Maintain a variety of records relating to inspections and maintenance activities May coordinate activities of a crew involved in streets and/or grounds maintenance/repair activities Support the work of crew members to ensure effective and efficient performance Inspect all parks, grounds, rights-of-way and other areas of responsibility for insects and other pests requiring extermination treatments; sprays insecticide and treats in accordance with methods and procedures as approved by the Department Head Keep streets, parks, medians and other areas throughout the Town free of debris by picking up litter, tree limbs, palm fronds and other accumulated materials, loading in pick-up truck and disposing of in a garbage packer Trim low hanging tree limbs from medians, right-of-way and other areas as required, and disposes of debris Install new, or replaces old, traffic signs, and other informational and/or directional signs Assist in the planting of trees in various areas throughout the Town Install maintain and repair irrigation systems Spray herbicide on curbs, sidewalks, streets, around trees, shrubbery, flower beds and other similar areas Assist in the set up and clean-up of Town special events Perform required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and backfilling Maintain, repair and/or replace concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters, storm drain boxes and lids; builds and/or install form work for pouring concrete; mixes and pour concrete Perform all duties in conformance with established and appropriate safety and security standards Demonstrate thorough knowledge of and adhere to all established department, division and Town policies and procedures Respond to and address any inquiries by the general public in a courteous, helpful and tactful manner Maintain communication with supervisor, forwards all messages to appropriate parties Ensure the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use Service department equipment and make minor repairs in the field as necessary May be required to work in other divisions on an as-needed basis Performs other job-related duties as necessary and consistent with the position Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Some knowledge of equipment, materials, methods and procedures used in park and ground maintenance activities Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time Ability to work safely Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions Physical Requirements Must frequently lift and/or move more than fifty (50) pounds and occasionally assist in lifting and/or moving more than one hundred (100) pounds Required to move; stand, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and sit Acceptable vision abilities required with or without correction Ability to hear normal conversational speech and the ability to distinguish between different sounds in a noisy environment Work Environment The statements noted below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed and are not to be construed as a comprehensive list of responsibilities, duties and skills required. - High school diploma or equivalent
- Three (3) years of experience in operating construction equipment and maintaining streets and grounds or other related experience
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements Special Requirements
- Valid State of Florida Driver’s License
