JOB SUMMARY
This position is primarily responsible for performing a variety of maintenance and repair work in support of the City’s wastewater treatment plant.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assists in collecting samples from commercial oxidation ponds; delivers samples to plant laboratory for analysis.
- Assists in installing, maintaining and repairing plant equipment.
- Assists in performing preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment.
- Cleans, inspects, and maintains filters, contact chambers and clarifiers.
- Cleans and maintains plant buildings and facilities; sweeps, mops, dusts, and vacuums office space, laboratory area, bathrooms, supply rooms, hallways, etc.
- Collects wastewater samples for standard tests, such a biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, suspended solids, pH, chemical, and bacteriological analysis.
- Ensures plant personnel safety equipment is clean, operable, and accessible.
- Monitors performance of machinery and equipment used to control the treatment process; makes process control decisions.
- Monitors treatment process and makes necessary adjustments as indicated by current conditions.
- Operates plant pump and haul truck.
- Performs grounds cleaning and maintenance work at oxidation pond areas.
- Performs grounds maintenance duties; mows grass, trims and edges ground areas with a weed-eater, rake leaves, operates a blower, and performs other related work.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
Possession of a valid State of Georgia driver’s license.
Additional Requirements:
Satisfactory motor vehicle report.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes. Knowledge of plant safety regulations and practices. Knowledge of wastewater treatment equipment and basic maintenance requirements. Knowledge of plant and mechanical operations. Skill in collecting and handling wastewater samples. Skill in cleaning water pollution control equipment. Skill in oral and written communication.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must have sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment. The work consists of continuous outdoor activity, frequent standing, sitting, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, toxic waste/material hazards. Must be able to work in confined spaces; walk and work on slippery and uneven surfaces. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to grasp, hold objects and tools with full range of motion in wrists and arms. Must have no impairments that limit work capabilities in year-round weather conditions. Must be able to bend and twist for lifting. Must have no limitations which restrict reaching, standing, stooping, bending, twisting and kneeling while performing the needed repairs or maintenance. Must be able to climb ladders, lift or carry 50 pounds while climbing ladder or steep banks. Must have no climbing or height restrictions up to 12 feet on a ladder or other equipment. Must be able to lift manhole covers weighing in excess of 50 pounds several times a day if necessary. Must be able to lift, carry, push and or pull light (5lbs) to moderate (50lbs) amount of weight. Must have close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Must have hearing ability sufficient to understand general in-person and telephone conversation. Must have ability to read a variety of informational, technical documentations, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work will be performed in an indoor and outdoor setting. While performing the functions of this position, the employee will be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of safety devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves. The City of Commerce has the right to revise this job description at any time.
