QUALIFICATIONS

A high school diploma or higher High school graduate and any combination of training and experience At least three (3) years successful experience as a maintenance worker, or equivalent service; preferable in the maintenance (upkeep) of a large building and grounds. Possesses knowledge and skills to perform basic repairs in the areas of plumbing, carpentry, electrical wiring, mechanical equipment, painting, and woodwork as necessary and appropriate for school facilities. Able to follow both oral and written instructions; ability to prepare and maintain appropriate records. Able to supervise as well as work alongside other maintenance employees.

APPOINTMENT

Maintenance Operative (Building and Grounds) shall be recommended by superintendents or designees of the superintendent, and appointed by the board.

Hours:

40 hours per week

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Standing, walking, sitting, lifting, and carrying (up to 30 pounds), reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, kneeling, and moving furniture may be required. The position requires the ability to perceive the nature of the object by the eye and the ability to give and receive information through effective speaking, listening, and writing skills.

JOB SUMMARY

To provide all students with a physical learning environment that is safe, clean, attractive, and smooth functioning by assisting with maintaining the physical district facilities in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, and safety, so that full educational use of them may be made at all times. Assist with maintaining the grounds of all district schools in a condition of safety, neatness, and aesthetic attractiveness, so that each student may be provided with an outdoor environment both pleasing in appearance and enjoyable for play.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Assumes responsibility for assigned maintenance and repair requirements of the district. Ensure the appropriate maintenance, grounds keeping, security, and ongoing custodial care of all school and office facilities of the district. Recommends for purchase necessary equipment and supplies. Receives, stores, and issues all maintenance and grounds materials, supplies, and equipment. Consistently inspects all school buildings, grounds, and installations on a regular basis to determine that high standards of workmanship, cleanliness, safety and security are maintained. Assist with conducting a periodic inspection of all school facilities to ensure fire safety and inspects and maintains fire alarm systems and fire extinguishers on a regularly scheduled basis. Assist with organizing and implementing a program of preventive maintenance. Keeps informed of the latest trends, developments, and products in the areas of maintenance, repair, and upkeep, and encourages innovation and experimentation as appropriate. Reviews on a regular basis all security precautions and procedures, and recommends additions, changes, or reductions in service as appropriate. Maintain grounds maintenance and gardening work of the district’s schools and related facilities. Confers with school principals, landscape architects, and other parties in making plans for landscaping, planning, and maintenance of various school grounds. Assist with selecting trees, shrubs, plants, and seeds appropriate for sowing. Perform skilled gardening duties as required. Determine the need for spraying, fertilizing, and pruning of trees and shrubs. Assist with supervising and inspecting the improvement and renovation work performed by outside contractors. Maintain inventory for all areas of maintenance assigned. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor, designee, or superintendents.
