School:
The North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD) is a residential school that provides Pre-K, elementary, middle, and high school programs for students between the ages of 4 (four) and 22 (twenty-two) for deaf and hard-of-hearing students from 47 of North Carolina’s 100 counties. NCSD is one of two schools for the deaf in North Carolina that provides an inclusive and appropriate learning environment in which deaf or hard of hearing children can develop to their maximum potential. The school offers a well rounded education for students by teaching academic, vocational, communication, social, emotional, and Independent Living skills. Our after school programs offer several team sports and special interest clubs. NCSD operates on a regular academic year, Sunday afternoon through Friday at 1:00 p.m. Support services and administration operate year-around. About the
Position:
The primary purpose of this position is to determine the care and treatment necessary to maintain grounds and shrubs in good condition. The position also consults with a supervisor and provides regular updates of treatment plan progress. Non-routine problems concerning the selection, placement, care, and treatment of plants to assure a beautiful and orderly landscape are referred to the supervisor or nursery dealer for advice. Work may include the supervision of a small number of employees. Work is inspected and evaluated on the basis of appearance of the grounds. This position is also required to give general assistance to other staff as needed to meet school property and program needs. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies An ideal candidate must document all of the following Knowledge, skills and abilities within in the body of their application. Working knowledge of grounds keeping and horticultural practices. Possess a working knowledge of the cultivation, pruning, spraying, and trimming requirements of shrubs and trees and the ability to make minor repairs to lawn mowers, hose, rakes, pruners, and sprayers. Proven ability to supervise the work of other employees. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Education and/or experience in grounds work that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade and equivalent to two years of experience in planting, cultivation, and care of shrubs, trees, plants and grasses.
Management Preferences:
Applicants with the ability to use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate and those with a valid NC Driver’s License to operate State vehicles.
