This is an Intermediate Level Roadside Environmental position that consists of a wide range of job responsibilities. The main focus of this position will be performing plant bed maintenance. Employee serves as a lead worker for the plant bed maintenance crew in Shelby, within the Division Roadside Environmental Unit. Position is primarily responsible is performing landscape plant bed maintenance and wildflower plant bed maintenance in the Division. Plant bed maintenance responsibilities include mowing and trimming around beds, pruning, spot spraying and manual weed removal, fire ant treatment where necessary, mulch replacement, watering, etc. Wildflower responsibilities include preparing, sowing, spraying, and fertilizing plant beds. When needed, will work with herbicide crew and seed crew to accomplish Roadside Environmental functions. May help with Routine maintenance and special projects required at Rest Areas when needed. Position participates in the daily Operational Risk Management program including participation in daily tailgate safety meetings and performing Pre-Trip inspections on equipment each morning. Position will be responsible for assisting in the completion of daily spray reports, good issues, time sheets, and handling public complaints. Position is responsible for his Personal Protective Equipment (PPE’s) dependent upon the nature of the work performed. Follows all applicable standard operating procedures (SOP’s). Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Knowledge of vegetation management includes but not limited to shrubs, trees, flowers, etc. using sound horticultural practices. Experience in performing grounds maintenance for NCDOT facilities and assets including mowing, trimming, bed edging, mulch installation, aeration, seeding and fertilizing Experience in operation of mowers, tractors, skid steer loaders on uneven terrain Experience in correctly applying herbicides and pesticides in accordance with the label to control weeds and brush in plant beds, as well as proper storage and disposal techniques
Additional Expectations:
Working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the manual and automatic equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. May require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, holidays, and times of emergency. Pre-employment drug testing will be required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. Necessary Special Requirements:
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.
