This work is related to the maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads within Gaston County. This supervisory position will be required to work in diverse working environments performing various general maintenance operations. The recommended applicant will supervise a roadway maintenance crew that is working in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment and with power tools. The recommended applicant must be able to maintain a close team environment or work independently as needed. Responsibilities include the supervision of a roadway maintenance crew that is involved in pavement patching, drainage maintenance, shoulder repair, paved and unpaved roadway maintenance, vegetation management, snow and ice removal and emergency response to roadway maintenance needs. This position is required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes. Position will investigate and answer concerns from the public. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: + Experience in road maintenance and repair, as well as maintenance equipment operation + Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used + Experience in NCDOT snow and ice operations + Experience in Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices. + Experience in planning work and supervising a work crew
Additional Expectations:
Conduct daily tailgate safety meetings; complete daily time sheets; respond to citizen complaints; install work zone traffic control; and operate trucks, equipment, and various hand and power tools. Position will be exposed to extreme conditions such as snow and ice, dust, extreme temps, high volumes of traffic, and heavy construction equipment. Must create a positive work environment with a team approach and be able to communicate effectively. Position will be subject to responding to emergency situations after normal work hours and on weekends. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for thepast three yearsabout controlled substances and alcohol. Safety toe footwear required.
