POSTING-Only temporary or permanent NCDOT employees or layoff candidates with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by GS 126 May ” This posting is for a Transportation Worker IV in our Halifax County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features.
In this position you will also serve as a lead worker of a highway maintenance crew. Responsibilities include installing traffic control and erosion control devices, roadway grading, and machining unpaved roads. pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage task,snow removal operations, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed and operating heavy equipment.
In this position you must be able to operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, lee boy asphalt maintainer, motor grader, rollers, and other pieces as needed on the various crews.
This work includes exposure to all types of weather conditions. This requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other circumstances. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper
Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety & NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching
Demonstrated ability to supervise and to train others in equipment operations as well as directing the dally activities of a work crew
Experience in snow and ice removal operations
Additional Expectations:
Ability to supervise work crews. Employee will be expected to promote a safe work environment. Ability to maintain working knowledge of all maintenance operating procedures. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Employee will be expected to maintain effective working relations with other employees and the general public. Ability to perform quantity calculations. Employee will be expected to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Safety toe shoes required. Class A CDL with N endorsements required.
