General Definition of Work:

Lee County is seeking a Maintenance Worker to work in the General Services department. This person will be responsible for performing semiskilled work in a variety of grounds maintenance assignments, operating specialized and other equipment in connection with assigned tasks, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Horticulturist. Job duties include but are not limited to are: perform basic grounds maintenance activities (mowing and planting grass, cutting, pruning, and trimming trees, raking and collecting leaves, removing fallen limbs, trees, and trash, aerating soil, and trimming hedges), operate and maintain equipment (mowers, tractors, skid steers, and backhoes), use chemicals and fertilizers, perform snow removal, install road signs, and attend required specialized trainings.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

General knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools; general knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of equipment used in grounds maintenance; general skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos; ability to write simple correspondence; ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions; ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables; ability to perform labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED and minimal experience working in grounds maintenance, mowing lawns or greenery, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to those who have pesticide applicators license or the ability to get the pesticide applicators license within two years.

Special Requirements:

Specific licensure or certification related to the area assigned may be required. Appropriate training will be provided and must be completed upon hire and on an ongoing basis. Valid driver’s license in the State of North Carolina. Availability to be on call for weekend work on a scheduled rotational basis.
