JOB SUMMARY

This position Responsible for performing skilled work in the maintenance of streets, park grounds and facilities. Assists in the maintenance of the City’s open ditches, canals, basins, sidewalks, and other areas.

REPORTS TO

The Crew Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions.

INCUMBENT CAN BE HIRED AS A MAINTENANCE WORKER I OR II, BASED ON EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS.

REQUIREMENTS

MAINTENANCE

WORKER I

Performs routine unskilled manual & semi-skilled work in cutting, cleaning of drainage ditches & storm pipe systems throughout the City.
Employs basic skills in the use of hand tools, weed eaters, bush axes, chain saws as necessary to perform work assignments.
Be familiar with equipment capabilities; perform daily routine checks & inspections, makes minor repairs & adjustments.
Performs other duties and tasks such as leaf collection, construction repair and winter storm activities.
Removes litter from open ditches.
Removes obstructions from drainage pipes.
Mows grass, edges curbs, and removes leaves; removes tree limbs and dead trees from parks and trims weeds in ditches.
Removes limbs with chainsaws and pole saws.
Repair damage caused by erosion.
Applies herbicides.
Operates mowers, blowers, edgers, and weed eaters.
Transports materials and equipment to work site.
Cleans manhole covers.
Maintains City rights-of-way.
Assists in the collection of leaves.
Follows safety guidelines.
Responds to after-hours emergencies.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

MAINTENANCE WORKER II

Maintains and repairs assigned tools and equipment.
Removes, repairs and installs curbs and gutters, sidewalks, and driveways.
Builds, forms, and pours catch basin tops.
Removes trees from roadways.
Installs barricades and other traffic control devices.
Digs and cleans out utility cuts for repair.
Assists in the collection of leaves.
Follows safety guidelines.
Transports equipment to work sites.
Responds to after-hours emergencies.
Operates mowers, blowers, edgers, and weed eaters.
Maintains City rights-of-way.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

MAINTENANCE

WORKER I

High School Degree or equivalent.
Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
Combination of experience in a related field of work.

MAINTENANCE WORKER II

High School Degree or equivalent.
Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class CDL- B driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina within six months of hire.

MAINTENANCE WORKER II

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Crew Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instruction and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include the Personnel Policy Manual; OSHA regulations; work zone safety standards; and equipment operation and repair manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY

The work consists of related maintenance duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT

The purpose of this position is to assist in the repair and maintenance of the stormwater system. Success in this position contributes to a well-maintained City infrastructure.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is light work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion, sitting, standing, and walking. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Required close visual acuity to perform activities like viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
