Description of Work This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. This posting is for a Transportation Worker II in the Division Roadside Environmental Unit reporting to the Sampson County Roadside office. Work is in the operational area of erosion control and vegetation management. Basic job functions include erosion control, planting and plant maintenance, pesticide application and general roadside duties, work includes installing traffic control devices. Work also includes operation, inspection and maintenance of equipment including trucks, tractors, tractor attachments, mulch blower and similar equipment, as well as hand and power tools. This position will also have responsibilities during snow and ice operations. Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License is mandatory for essential duties. CDL can be obtained through on-the-job training with 360 days to obtain a License or employment will be terminated. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is required within 30 days of employment. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Working knowledge of vegetation management including but not limited to shrubs, trees, fertilizer, etc. using sound horticultural practices.
Experience in at least one piece of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, front end loader, dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, mulch blower, sod seeder, tractor with sprayer attachments, brush chipper, conventional pesticide applicator, Front end loader, hydroseeder, skid steer.
Experience in correctly applying herbicides and pesticides in accordance with the label, as well as proper storage and disposal techniques. Experience operating equipment designed for all aspects of landscape operations.
Additional Expectations:
Working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Ability to operate a Class A motor vehicle and or perform flagging operation to safely guide traffic through work zones; perform manual labor for extended periods of time; operate equipment that vibrates; perform essential functions in extreme hot and or cold weather; traverse uneven terrain; repetitively lift 50 lbs. May require work during non-traditional work hours, including nights, weekends, holidays and times of emergency. Ability to respond to emergencies, including snow, ice, and other maintenance emergencies. Necessary Special Requirements:
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
