INTERNAL POSTING
-Only Temporary or Permanent NCDOT employees or layoff candidates with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by GS 126 May Apply. This position will report to the Madison Maintenance Unit in Madison County. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, repairing pavements, assisting with pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inventorying materials, inspecting contract work and operation of heavy equipment. Work may require lifting to 50 lbs. repeatedly. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions. Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to Emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Qualified applicants must submit an application that CLEARLY reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Working knowledge of standard road maintenance, and construction procedures.
Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
Experience in at least two pieces of Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck with aerial device).
Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching.
Additional Expectations:
Position requires visual acuity, bending, walking, and standing on uneven terrain and the ability to safely and repeatedly lift and carry 50 lbs. Exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. The selected applicant must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in written form. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle with manual and automatic transmissions and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement and no restrictions. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe shoes required.
