Description of Work This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. This position will function as a Transportation Worker III for the Sampson Maintenance Unit located in Clinton, NC. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices involved in road maintenance and construction activities, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, repairing pavements, assisting with pipe installation and other drainage tasks, inventorying materials, operation of heavy equipment, and other assigned tasks. Applicants must have the ability to operate a small tandem dump truck. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to shoveling, raking, asphalt, flagging traffic, ditching, and shrubbing. The position may be subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or extreme circumstances. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.
Demonstrated experience supervising and training others in equipment operations, as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.
Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper.
Additional Expectations:
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Steel toe safety shoes will be needed. The employee will be expected to work in emergency situations and inclement weather. •Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.•Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. High School or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements:
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
